So what's everyones take on H1s.

I've read about the PITA adjustments and rare replacement parts, but I really like the looks of the H1s...

Are they difficult to put into 71 fenders?

 

Why not go H4 ?

H1's are cool, but why not H4's? If you are putting a 3.4 or more in I'd think you could also get away with H4's.

 

My only prob with them is that they are not very bright and sealed.

 

H1's are the top of the food chain for 911's. They are plenty bright, and the fact they aren't sealed beams is the key-having the ability to independently adjust low and high beams is the big feature-they offer the ultimate in driving illumination. The high beams can be pointed as far down the road as you want, and you can still be legal with the low beams. I love mine, and they aren't hard to adjust. All it takes is a wall or garage door, a tape measure and about 15 minutes. Next time you're around Ruby, check hers out.

The downsides are very high acquisition cost and replacement parts are scarce. Having said that you can still get NOS lenses. I've got a couple in stock in my garage.

Tired of your H4's? Upgrade to H1's.

 

There's a couple sets up for sale and I think they look pretty sweet. Those Cibie Biodes are also nice but Hella exspensive (pun intended).

If I get to that car run on Sat. I'll take a peek into Ruby's eyes. Are they just the same bucket attachement points for Ruby?

 

You can get heavy plastic film to protect your headlights. I put some on my H4s, and it's like armor plating, but perfectly clear. I used to get chips and occasionally a hole in my headlight lenses, but they've stayed pristine for over ten years.

 

xpel.com is what I have on mine. It is on the 993 too, but I do have a small star on one of them. 993 lenses are a LOT more than H1 lenses, which boggles my mind.

Ed-the trim ring has one attachment screw at the bottom and 4 adjusting screws around the perimeter.

No worries. Congrats on obtaining a set, Ed. You have VW lenses on your H1s. I just upgraded headlights with HID projectors that use the same lenses. They look great.

 

You can purchase a complete HID hi/lo bulb/ballast system on Ebay for less than $200.

Beats ANY incandescent/halogen bulb and burns only 35W each, no HEAT issue whatsoever.

 

I think they'll look pretty sweet I like the fact that they are clear and you can see the different reflectors. (Bling > light output). But I'm not sure what will really happen with clear lenses and no flutes, I'm assuming that the light does not disperse (flood) evenly?

 

Sometimes, it is kinda cool to stick with "High Tech" from back in the day...

 

Honestly, I am not sure if they will work since the H1s were designed with the fluted lenses, not clear lenses. I don't have a problem with light dispersion because of the projectors. There is a very clear cutoff, even moreso than the H1 lenses I had, which weren't as distinct at all. I'll be curious to hear what you experience. H1 lenses are relatively cheap on Pelican for only $38/per side.
