Alright,

Well, she stopped running early this week and I only have time to work on the 911 on the weekends.

I wasn't getting any fuel at all to the filter, so I put her on jacks. I took off the front belly pan, tapped on the fuel pump, and played with the electrical connections. She started right up, ran a little rough, but fine after a minute.

In an old MGA, if I were to bang on the fuel pump (which was going bad) with a mallet, sometimes that would get it to continue running. So, I'm guessing the 911's fuel pump is going bad too even though its a few decades later in design. Either that or I have an intermittent electrical signal, but the connections looked pretty good.

Has anyone replaced a fuel pump? Can the fuel lines just be held closed, or does the tank need to be drained? I have about a half tank, so that'll be problematic. Will a NAPA type pump work, or should I go with a Porsche product?

Or, is this something that most people like to take to a mechanic?

Thanks,
Jon

Loren posted earlier that once you confirm spark, spray ether into the intake (while cranking) to confirm lack of fuel delivery. Once confirmed, you can check fuel pressure and delivery, or you can start replacing parts. As Ed mentioned, the fuel filter would be logical under that scenario.

Thanks Runs. I think i found the issue. Looks like a broken coil cable to distributor cap. I've attached pics. I didn't get to test spark. will do that tomorrow but fairly sure i need to change cables. since I'm at it I'll change caps, rotor, coil and all cables.

You're looking for a fat white spark when testing for spark. Weak spark is no good.
