Default 87 Carrera Clutch

I bought a 1987 Carrera about a month ago. Was wondering if others find that getting into a gear takes some feathering until engine temp is to first bar and then seems to be easier to get into gear thereafter. The gears don't really grind but they are not as smooth when the engine is not warmed up. Thank you.

That sounds a lot like mine and most guys will say the same. Mine became much better with fresh oil and LSD additive.

Yep, a gear oil change and proper amount can do wonders. Treat it kindly when shifting.

Same here although it wasn't a problem until I had the syncro replaced ( really only needed 3rd syncro and 3rd gear but it was a while we're in here thing) - 5,000 miles later it is still stiff cold. I didn't think about it possibly being lube related, I'll have to find out what they used.

The next logical question will be what gear oil to choose.

For the G50, the best available oil is Mobil Delvac 80W-90

http://www.mobil.com/France-English/..._A_80W-90.aspx

I don't know where you are located so I can't help with locating a dealer.... It can be hard to find and some P-Car dealers carry it in bulk (mine does).

Is changing the transmission oil a reasonable DIY job? I don't want to do my engine oil change just due to the tendency for folks to overfill...

The trans is not a bad job. You will need to lift it high enough to get under the car and reach both the fill and drain.

The challenge with the job is filling the trans. You will be best served with a pump or utilize a gravity feed system.

If you do this job, just be sure to loosen the fill plug BEFORE you drain the trans.

Scott

Changing trans is tougher than oil, IMO. The only reason folks overfill is because they go into it unarmed with proper knowledge. Oil change is a great first DIY project. Just read the info, and know the proper way to check the level.

It's an easy job. A pump is mandatory for tranny fill. Get a new one from your FLAPS. You will need to pump almost an entire gallon. Make sure to let overfill drain back out before capping the fill plug.

Easy job it is, and I've done it a number of times, but how many threads are there on goofed-up plugs? My main point was for him not to be afraid of an oil change.

Just remember that the LSDA is worse than deer urine. It's a double glove and trow away the shop towels kind of job.

With a pump it's easy, but man does it stink.

The hard part with the tranny change was getting the fill plug off. It took a large breaker bar and some penetrating oil for me to get it off for the first time.

As others have said remove the fill plug FIRST then the drain plug. I also use the Delvac and it shifts smoother now than before. It is a little grumpy when cold but that is true for any car.
