I am currently looking to move from my 944S2 to a 911/964. My current wrench says I need to get a 1988 or later in order to get the G50 tranny. However the Pelican Site shows that the G50 came in 1987. Does anyone know if there is a specific manufacturing date/VIN # that would be the intro point? He says to try to avoid the 915 tranny. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure all '87's had the G50. Mine was built in Sept. 1986, is an '87 and has the G50. HOWEVER, some people complain that 1987 G50's make some strange noises, which were corrected in 1988. Those noises are not indicative of any problem -- just a quirk. G50's are prettymuch bullet-proof.

As Bill V. indicated, the VIN# will have an "H" in it at the 10th position. By the way, the numbers Bill gives are trans. ID numbers.
For example, my VIN# is WP0AB0916HS121433, 12/86 build date.
The H that indicates the car is a 1987 model year is seen in the 10th position above. As far as other G50 Carreras are concerned, 1988's letter is J (no I used) and 1989's letter is K.
My trans. is noisy as well if anybody cares.

Thanks for all the replies. Several have emailed me off list as well. I appreciate it. Being as the 1987 Targa is in MD. and I'm here in St. Louis I wnat to get these things right before paying for a long distance inspection service. Of course I'm trying to use my 944 in a trade as well so maybe I shouldn't nit pick everything. The guy is asking $19.8k and the car has around 52k miles. I keep forgeting to ask about records. Think I'll email him now.
