Lightbulb Backdating 88 911 Carrera to early RS?

My Porsche thought of the day...

I've an '88 911 Carrera that is a wonderful daily driver. I also have a '72 911T I'm hoping to do an RS conversion on in the (near?) future. But I got to thinking today, couldn't I just backdate the bodywork on my '88 to make it look like a '73 RS? It would give me the easy daily driver with the "charm" of an early car (and maybe save me some weight as well!) I'm curious to see what others think of such a transformation? Thoughts...?

Doug:
Funny you mention this because I have thought of this conversion as well for my 84. I love the look of the pre 74s but had to pass on a nice 71 RS Clone in 1999 because I didn't have a garage. Doing this conversion on an 80s tub would give you the galvanized body so the rust factor wouldn't be as big an issue.

My other thought is to update mine with 964 nose, rear and rockers. I second the

I recall a guy doing this to a early '90's C2...

It was in Excellence mag I think.

He had to do some mods to get the hood to fit & close/latch (the leading edge latching area is different on the "long early hood").

It looked great when he was done, and he had the "late model" driveability he was looking for to boot!

Its not a crazy idea. Heck... Lots of guys on the 993 forums have adapted the "duck tail" at the least to their cars.

Great look.

Indeed, Excellence had in the past shown a 964RS that had its body work converted to look like a 73 RS. What a fantastic way to have the earlier look with the later cars "creature comforts".

But at the end of the day, you would really want to consider whether or not this would cause a big problem come resale time (assuming you decide to sell your car)...I think people tend to buy older cars made to look like the later models, but I am not so sure that the same would hold true for a newer car made to look retro....

Don't worry about resale value. I don't think it would affect it. I have spent plenty of time thinking about the same thing, and it makes sense. You will already have the flares, so that cuts the cost. The only welding involved is the front part of the tub has to have the earlier latch panel welded on. Nothing major to a body shop that works with 911's. In the rear, the reflector panel has to be removed. Again, it's simple. In the end, you have an rs with a later engine, brakes, etc... All in all, a very desirable car. I think this type of backdating is going to become more common since the earlier cars will eventually become harder to find. Not to mention the shape the earlier cars are in.

These are from the Pelican 911 board archives, this has come up over there a couple times.

Hope this helps.

Wow! Thanks for the great input. I guess in some ways I was just looking for a little support for the idea. It's good to know I'm not totally insane.

Some comments:

I'm not too worried about resale. I didn't spend too much on this '88, as it's more of a driver than anything concourse level. With all of it's stone chips and a slightly faded front fender, it need a paint job anyway. Runs perfect, of course. But I figured if I'm going to get involved in any body/paint work, maybe I'd make something special out of it. And after all, isn't that why we drive Porsches? ...for something special?

LOVE the 993 with a ducktail. It looks very natural! More evidence that the 993 is the best looking 911 of all?

I'll have to search my library of Excellence for these articles. I think I remember them.

My friend argues that my '72 is in too nice of condition to turn into an RS, thus part of my thinking of making the '88 into one. But then what do I do with my '72?

None of this will happen for a while, so I'll have some time to ponder....
