Default Rear Decklid black grill

Hi all -

I want to remove and re-paint my rear decklid grill on my '87 coupe. Has anyone done this? What is the best paint to use?

I have a good exterior satin metal paint that worked well on my wiper blade holders, but the existing/old finish of the grill seems to have some "speckle" to it.

thanks!

I'd use Wirth satin black, but then again I'm not going to enter a Concours event.

Try the black rubber trim paint from Griots Garage, or Wurth Rubber Care. I think you're talking about the plastic grill?

I used SEM 'Landau Black', came out very nice, not too shiny, not too flat. It is for plastics, vinyl, etc so it has some flex to it. I don't have that car anymore but it stood up well in the Arizona sun for about eight years.

I used Rust-o-leum. Primer first, followed by satin black. It still looks great after 5 years.

Thanks all. I went with Rust-o-leum (with primer) and it looks great IMO...

That came out really nice.

Mine is in pretty good shape and I use Mothers Back-to-Black once or twice a year to keep it from looking faded.

nice...

in a related incident I was pulled over and given a speeding ticket two days after I took possession of the car. I was headed to the DMV to get it titled at the time

I'm over it now and almost consider it funny based on timing. The last ticket I got was about 9 years ago in my 993 I'd owned all of 5 days. I guess it was just in the cards..

I've used 3M Rubber and Trim Detail on mine a couple of times. Last time was 3-4 years ago, and it still looks good. Then again, it hasn't been out of the garage in that time. But, the plastic of that grille really soaks up the trim detailers and stays black nicely. It was a big pain in the butt to put it on and make sure it got in all the nooks and crannies, but it was worth it.
