If you Google Porsche 911 whine in 5th gear, you'll find that it's very common. Not so clear consensus on why 5th whines and the others don't. It's not like the pinion repairs itself in 1-4.

I wouldn't let my engine run at 1,800 in any gear, let alone 5th. Heck, anything under 3,000 is abuse in my book.

and the problem with the idle sounds to be like the ICV or idle control valve. Is it buzzing properly? Has it been cleaned or replaced? It may be sticking open and allowing too much air in when the throttle is closed. That is where I would start. My car had that same issue years ago and a cleaned ICV helped, but a new ICV fixed the issue entirely.

Could be ICV but the symptoms point to stuck throttle.

Guys again, thanks for the many replies, Ok ok, got the point won't lug it around with too low rpm's, must be after all these years of bmw 525 turbo diesel driving....
As for scott c, that's funny that your wife is from Turnhout, because so am I, even stranger is that my brother married an American woman and now lives in Texas???? ha

She likes the higher revs.........always remember that!

Just cleaned/lubed my ICV this weekend and she seems a bit better for it (especially=idle).
