Post Do oil-fed tensioners ever fail?

I have a 1981 911SC. It was converted to oil-fed chain tensioners by a previous owner. I'm hearing a noise that I, (and others) belieive to be the timing chain. Do these "bullet-proof" tensioners ever fail? How about the plastic guide rails?

Yes, they do fail, I saw 2 this past summer. If you hear a noise investigate right away.

Yikes.....I just bought a used set for about half the price of a new set because of their 'bullet proof' reputation. Mabye used was ot a wise decision.

Are there rebuild kits avail. for the hyd. tensioners? Or are there tell-tale signs (prior to installation) of them being bad or failing soon?

I'm with Bill on this one..and pressure tens. can become a wild discussion..some say change them at 50k-70k/some say wait it out..my tens. have 40k and I may change cams..but my tens. work great now and I will not look for possible problems by changing them..and I don't know anything about rebuilding..some say do a bench bleeding before install, which is not on any instruction material/which I did by instinct..not a pro here.....Ron

Thanks Bill, Charlie, Ron and Brian.
I guess the hydraulic tensioners are just "bullit-resistant"! I guess my baby is finally going to see a wrench.
