I am a new Porsche owner, as in just got my car a month or so ago. I could not get gas in the tank either. So I contacted the guy that I purchased it from and here was the recommendation. First he said, "That's right you have never owned a 911."
Put the nozzle in the car, have the nozzle all the way in and turn the handle towards the windshield (90 degrees counter-clockwise). So the nozzle/handle will be parallel to the pump versus perpindicular. Once I did this, then I had no problem filling the tank to capacity.
Oh also, always make sure you hit 91/93 Octane button. Wish I could get the high octane fuel in Colorado, all we get at the pump is the 91.
New 86 owner (well, not a new 86, but new to me ). After spilling fuel while filling up today, I searched and came across this thread. Next time I'll be trying the 180 degree turn of the nozzle...
I felt like a fool - I was looking around, enjoying the beautiful afternoon and all of a sudden I could smell gas fumes in a very strong way. This was after about 15 liters had been pumped in and the tank was below 1/4 so I didn't think I needed to pay that close of attention yet... Now my left shoe smells like gas too !!
I managed to get about 60 liters in, pumping slowly and having the pump stop every 5-10 seconds.
i prefer to control the flow and pump handle and never just let it auto fill. but then that's me trying to prevent erratic dings to the body and paint. to each his own.
upside down nozzle works for me everywhere. at most places people are in awe of the car, rather than the weird nozzle orientation, so its alright.. i figured it out after a couple of hold-it-till-tank's-full outings wayyyy back when i bought the car some of the mobil pumps work fine normally in upstate new york.
I can control the flow with the handle on my 89 while leaving her in the straight down position..(no such thing as "auto-fill" (ahem!) I only use 2 places to get gas (mostly one)...it works both locations..HOWEVER, I HAVE seen some situations (outa' town) where the girl didn't like the flow rate apparently,....requiring the gymnastics duly noted within this thread,...certainly necc'y, at least, "AT THAT PUMP"!
Looks to be several variables at work here...
Aside from the "input-side" of it,...what should owners periodically check on the car? (to ensure no problems exist that would cause a fill fill issue),..
I bet the owner's manual doesn't state that you "may" need to rotate the frikin' handle 90-180 degrees (is it CW or CCW?) under "certain conditions" (definitions, aside, too).
Let's drill down on this a bit,.....both: what's on the input side and what's on the rx'g side....as to refueling....that would require these alterations,..and what these alterations would produce (otherwise)....
