Mark Nadler from Exotech who works on my 911 and 914 says all 911's are at least a $15K car. If you buy it for $6.5K then be ready to put in $8.5K to just get it back to DD status. A full restoration could cost you $30K for a basic one.
If you are going to buy a 911 then it is safe to say you will spend at least $15K, so why not buy a $15K 911 and get something that is ready to go. My $.02 anyway! Good luck and post pictures.

Hi guys,
The car looks almost identical to this 1977 model:
http://www.classicandperformancecar....re.php?id=3381, so I am thinking it is a 1977.
Also, the badge on the trunk lid reads "911s".
The comments no the 2.7 are starting to scare me. I think I'll start doing some searches for info on that motor.

I chased down a few SC's and even a few Carreras at Sebring with my lowly 2.7. The real trick is to keep them cool.
Pay the extra during the PPI to check for pulled headstuds (a gasket set and time, big deal)
each engine series has their issues:
2.7 mag case - pulled studs - crummy pollution - valve guides
3.0 broken head studs - no carrera tensioners - pop off valve airbox
3.2 smaller rod bolts - valve guides
964 early - smaller rod bolts - head to cylinder no gasket - valve guides
964 late - smaller rod bolts - valve guides
993 SAI - smaller rod bolts - valve guides
Know these things going in and plan accordingly

You might want to remember that a decent paint job is going to cost around $6000 if no bodywork is required. Also 77's are not zinc treated so they rust "easier" than the 78 and later cars (which can rust as well). With that mileage, hopefully the head studs have been addressed. It would be nice to have carrera tensioners and a pop-off valve is "mandatory" upgrade.
You also should expect to be able to do your own "mechanic" work on the car for the most part. 30+ year old cars are going to need a lot of attention. In the end you will have a very rewarding experience if you enjoy tinkering and are patient.

74 was not zinc coated
75 was partially zinc coated - roof and doors
By 1976 - virtually the entire car was zinc coated. same as 1977.
1978 designated as SC with wider "carrera" rear flares.

For what it is worth.------ I bought a 1976 silver targa with the clamshell red interior in Denver for $3,500 4 years ago. The whole car was a 7 or 8 and good tires. It leaked badly. After pulling the engine and doing the leak stop, it drove for a few thousand miles before the head studs went, taking out the head. After pulling it apart for a rebuild I discovered the pricy problems associated with the 2.7 engine. I was able to sell it to Germany for what I had in it. Yes, I did buy a spare engine and found it too had problems.
My suggestion, ESPECIALLY because it is family, is to gracefully escape the deal. Try for a SC, or if you can afford the Carrera, get it.
