Default Nicht so gut start to the weekend...

Well, I had taken my 911 to have it looked at for a fairly rough idle, and turned out just to be plugs. So I packed the family into the car to go and pick it up now pumped for the weekend. Driving down the road and all of a sudden loud bang and the car drops in the back, first thought is a flat. But not my luck, I'm not mechanically inclined nor do I know exactly what the deal is, but the back end of the car is basically sitting on my back tires evenly. I was able to coast it off the road and after sitting for 2 hours with tired kids in the car finally got it towed right back to the shop. Not blaming them by any means.

Any ideas of what it could be. My 3 year old chimed in "daddy broke the porsch uh again."

The only time I've seen that happen is when the rear torsion bar tube suddenly tore away from the body.

The odds of both torsion bars breaking at the same time is very slim.... My guess is the central torsion bar connection tearing..

Sorry to hear about this.

I haven't gotten the chance to do a ton of digging. Is this pretty expensive to fix?

It would require a Celete jig, if that is what happened. Not cheap.

Lay it on me, I must suck at searching, I can't come up with prices. Are we talking a grand, or 3? Even a ballpark would be appreciated at just how much my holiday weekend just went down the tube. Thanks for the quick responses guys!

It's not a good idea to jump to conclusions. I'd pour myself a good stiff drink, light a cigar, and put it out of my mind. Think happy thoughts, but if you want to prepare yourself for the worst case, rest assured that others have had the worst happen, and have been able to fix the car. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...-what-now.html

Note: He bypassed alignment issues by grafting a new center section. Ingenious!

This will be pretty bad--not a typical repair at all, in fact rare. So, it isn't as if such a number is common knowledge. It ain't a grand, IMO.

It does sound like a torsion bar tube failure and thats very rare unless the car has been driven in salty winters for a long time.

Regardless, a Celette car bench will be required to effect a proper repair.

Had the tube fail on my 1970 S 20 years ago.
We used a hole saw to cut both longitudinals from the outside and then cut the tube on the inside so that we could get the hole saw to it from the inside.
We used another car that was at my friends shop with the engine out to make a jig for positioning the tube. We used the trans mounts and inside corners/edges of the firewall belly pan to locate the new one.

At the time the replacement tubes all had holes in them for drainage?? The holes also allowed good access to shoot "body wax" rust proofing into the tubes every couple of years.

Ouch !! Sorry to hear that. First thing that came to my mind was torsion bar damage from tube failure road salt as Steve mentioned. Hopefully we are all wrong as I expect the torsion bar would be an expensive fix. On a side note you gotta love that comment of your three year old ... that's priceless.
