Had a really fun weekend with a 911 so figured as i had some downtime id share. Hopefully ill be able to attach a few pics.
After a somewhat hasty Ebay Iphone purchase - no idea why but couldnt resist - ebay mobile was congratulating me as the lucky (!??) buyer of a 1976 widebody 911 with a 993 engine, sport clutch and custom center exhaust.. sooo late last friday i decided i should really bite the bullet and go and pay for it and pick it up.. im in NY and this 911 was sitting down in Orlando.. Figured id take the gamble and fly down with a buddy and see if it would make it back to NY in time for last orders on Saturday night... So borrowed a dealer plate, grabbed the cigarette lighter phone charger, a cashiers check and more than a little faith and headed to the airport Saturday mornng.. Got there and cabbed it to the sellers address.. Well its definitely a bright yellow 911 and it seemed to have had plenty done to it.. All the window seals, rubber of any kind was replaced and more importantly, in the back was a 3.6. Tied up all the paperwork and anxious to get on the road, checked the oil and tire pressures and removed the harness bar to allow the seats a little more incline for the journey.. Now if im honest, the first hour or so wasnt so good.. the car didnt pull v well and the brakes were a bit miserable.. anything above 80 mph felt pretty damn scary... but i knew it had been sat for a while so onwards i went. pressures remained good and temperatures were stable so i felt a little better. Then the emergency broadcast on the radio kicked in.. Severe Storm Warning near Jacksonville... hmm.. where was i.. oh yep.. near jacksonville. greaaat.. the sky then turned some really bizarre color of purple and off started the most spectacular lightning storm. Summer tires and 9'/11' set up made the next hour kinda interesting but at the same time the car started to sort itself out.. the Engine smoothed out.. seemed to double in power and the syncro that had been a little off sorted itself out. The sound this car makes cannot be described well. It is the most epic sounding porsche ive ever heard. It has the capability to be a little bit civil under 3k rpm but above 5 its insane. I always try and figure out why im so obsessed with 911's and its journeys like this that make me love them more..ive still yet to really drive this car in the dry and yet a 35 year old car (albeit modified) made a 1000 mile journey non stop without burning any oil or wobbling reliability wise and still being a blast (after the initial hour) to drive. After jacksonville thru to ny it didnt stop raining the entire way (longest time in non stop rain ever) but i was still enjoying myself immensely. I guess i wouldnt know as i dont read ferrari forums but i just dont imagine u hear of other 100k plus mile , 35 year plus cars still able to easily swallow up 1000 miles in a straight shot and be amazing fun at the same time.. 3:30am ticked on the clock as i rolled into NY - thankyou 5 hour energy - and i trundled the car into the garage. Now as my latest project i am leaning towards this being a CTR yellowbird ish looking effort.. now i guess im going to get some criticism for making a RUF look 911 with a widebody but im not sure im that bothered.. so on the orderlist are some carbon fiber CTR bumpers and the 935 mirrors and 18" RUF Rims. I guess i should drop in a TT 993 engine but again it drives so well im going to just start off with 993 TT Big brakes and go from there. no point making the thing go if it wont stop... and im not particularly bothered if its not the fastest porsche around. Drove around monday to see how my RS project is coming along (at the ducktail and steel mirror stage right now) and finally switched back into the daily driver - a 964 C2. Its so hard to play favorites. i love the 964.. i guess it was a little bit of a relief to drive after the '76.. more refined, less stress to drive but overall less of an event. Now this isnt a criticism, just a v different car with v different merits. I'll post what few pics i have for anyone interested but the best pics of the car are probably on the sellers website.. (now im a little unhinged but im not mad. i didnt pay anywhere near what the website says) http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/album61
