I helped someone here local on a 993 clutch job/R&R, and there is a lot more involved with an engine drop, to be sure.

Yes there is more. I don't mind saying though, that when Porsche integrated the multi-link rear suspension, they did it well. It's generally thought that a multi link rear suspension takes up some real estate. This was a challenge/compromise on the BMW E36 and the Benz 190e/300e. Porsche sculpted a beautiful and affective rear end in a crowded space. The cross member comes right out and the drivetrain drops like it always had without disturbing the rear alignment. it's a little tight in places, but it's very cool also.

Alright let me put it this way, what is the easiest 911 to work on for someone who has a standard set of tools and a jack, and can also be daily driven. AC really isn't all that important me as much as the driving experience.

My "79 sc coupe is my DD. I live in a hot climate so I simply, albeit expensively, upgraded the AC with Griffiths' system and everything is great!
The car had low mileage when I bought it so there was a series of minor issues when I began driving her daily. But since then, my baby has been nothing short of amazing. The 911sc is a classic which fully deserves its reputation. Sometimes I sit behind the wheel joy riding and just laugh out loud with delight. If you get one running good, you're satisfaction will be renewed daily!

I LOVE this ca!!

Good perspective^^^^^. Any well maintained SC/Carrera can take a serious beating daily. Better than most cars. I know a 78 SC that is heavily track preped, but serves as a semi-DD and has for over a decade. At best calculations, this car has over 10K TRACK miles, and thats driving it to the track; and to work on Monday morning. There was a recent thread in the 944 forum comparing the reliability between a 911 and a 944/951. Everybody says the 44/51 is so much more reliable....BS. I stayed out of the conversation.

How much more difficult is it working on a 964 compared to a VW Bug?

If you are skilled enough to take out the engine and tranny of a bug, replace the through-out bearing, and put it back in an hour or so; shouldn't working on a 964 not be that difficult?

Valve adjustments will take way longer with the 964 vs. the air-cooled VW.

Trouble-shooting electrical or engine systems is a bit more involved than turning wrenches. But, as they say, we aren't talking rocket science!

well, not exactly. The similarities are to numerous to list, so are the differences. Kind of like comparing an amoeba to an earthworm. I'd let the earthworm guy work on my amoeba, but not the other way around.

How true! If only my wife understood the concept I could buy back the slant nose in my avatar. Three just isn't enough.

A big question is though, how are they to work on compared to the 964?

I have a 82 SC coupe and a 92 C4 Coupe and the 82 is WAY easier...I also have a 65 fastback mustang which I liken to the SC...not too many things that can go wrong...I barely drive them and am probably going to trade 2 of the 3 in on a new truck (along with my current truck)...

anyway...I love the RAW feeling of the SC...what I would really like to do is back date one, but I like keeping them semi-original...so my long term plans will probably be to get an early hotrod 911 down the line...
