Default 911 ICM

Well, heres the story, I work for O'Reilly Auto parts in Rexburg, ID I had a customer come in with a 79 911 and he said that his ICM had gone bad, we found out the bosch one from Porsche can cost 2000+ dollars, and that a permatune system costs about 600 if your lucky, what do you guys suggest he does? I am a former 924, and 914 owner but man I always had more respect for you guys and your genuine Porsche's vs me with my Audi and my Volkswagen.

I've also heard from some people back in the SF Bay Area (Easy and Parts Heaven) that the permatune just isn't as good as the Bosch and they tend to die after a few years?

If the case is that you guys always end up buying the permatune or paying the 2000+ for the new one from Porsche I may start a company rebuilding these ICM's I'm a college student and have been looking for something to start doing when I get out of school.

Appreciate the help guys, hopefully these are the only real options and I can start supplying some cheaper ones or something...

Some people use MSD some people rebuild them.

As I recall there was a big article at Pelican about rebuilding them.

Personally, I would install an MSD and matching MSD coil.

"Permadooms" are just not reliable and Bosch ones are super expensive, as you've noted. Used Bosch units are simply that: used, and now over 28 years old.

"Bosch ones are super expensive"

Right, for those that get ripped-off by the unscrupulous!

Do a Google search for "Bosch CDI Unit" (as shown in quotes).
There are many sources for rebuilt 911 Bosch units that range in price from
$200 - $300. No need to pay ridiculous prices for a new unit.

Avoid the Perma-Tunes as they are very unreliable. The MSD units are more
complex than the original Bosch unit and as such less reliable. The MSD
will require rewiring of the ignition harness. But if the the 911 owner plans
on adding a small block Chevy engine, then the MSD addition will look nice
in the engine compartment, i.e. Like a Nascar engine compartment.
