HI, new to the 911 forum. I used to own a 86.5 928. I just sold it and am thinking about a 911 purchase. Looking at years 2000-2002, this is more of my price range. Looking for some answers, maybe a starting point for research, is this is a good choice for me?
Some questions I have:
What is maintenance like?
Are there any commom problems to be aware of?
Are their specific big ticket item fixes/maintenance( in the 928 it is belt replacement)
I saw a thread for pre purchase inspection, i will definetly take a look at that.
anyone that can shead some light, please do.
thanks

no such thing
I seem to recall there are pitch forks and torches at the ready for waterpumpers.
You might have better luck in the 996 section.
Yes RMS and IMS
I have done a 928 belt... it's complete insanity.

The 996 and later cars are definitly different than a 911-proper(meaning air cooled). Each version is a bit different, and you would have to drive each of them to see what you like.
I think the IMS problem is not as big a deal as some may think. It's an easy job to prevent, but the newer cars don't seem to satisfy the grizzled porsche veteran. I could be wrong.
There are some smart guys here who have/do owned the 996/997 cars and may give you a better take on it.

IMS (can lead to catastrophic engine failure)
RMS
Coolant tanks fail
Water pumps (60K mile intervals)
The 996 section might be better equipped to handle your questions/concerns
