Default Newbie questions - please be gentle!

About to acquire an 88 M491. ( I checked with Norbert on the VIN and it checks out as a factory M491)

A few naive questions:

The car has an aftermarket Pioneer audio system. I like the idea of returning it to the original, or nearly original system. I believe that the 88's came with a Blaupunkt Charleston, or perhaps a Blaupunkt Reno. So I could scour for a used one, or I could spend $299 and get a new Blaupunkt Dearborn which has the nice "retro" look that I desire. Any thoughts on this topic, I realize this may be a matter of taste. Anyone know exactly which radio was standard and which were options?

Any concerns with putting a Blaupunkt back on a car that has had an aftermarket audio system installed?

The car has polished Fuchs, which look fine, but the center caps look a bit rough. Is this something to just look for on eBay or this forum, or do people have a trusted source for replacements? Can they be refinished? This set has the painted crest, silver background.

The center wheel caps can be found at just about every Porsche parts vendor. Pick up a copy of Excellence magazine at your favorite news stand.

The radio will have zero effect on value, especially on that car. I would leave the stereo alone if it's working, unless you want to improve upon it. But going back to a 30 year old stereo yields no brownie points for kharma, if you know what I mean. The very highest end Blaupunkt units are very good, but the rest are terrible.

Seems like good advice on the radio, I guess I'll just leave it as-is. thanks-

Nakamichi has a retro look with modern sound quality. They might be worth a look.

As far as the center caps, I painted mine myself several years ago. If it is just the paint, I would get a small brush and the proper colors and do it yourself.

My '88 still has the Reno in it. It works fine.....but I haven't turned it on in years.

That scratchy volume **** always irritated me. I know I unloaded a couple of cans of contact cleaner into various blaupunkts.
Welcome to the 911 family.

wildcat077, true - new tires is already on my growing list, but not wheels (I love the Fuchs and wouldn't touch those)

Thanks, I'll post pics if nothing incriminating is found during PPI.

One other thing, any recommendations for a Porsche shop in Minneapolis or SE Minnesota?

Default PPI shop

FlatSix is a trusted shop for many in the Twin Cities - Bloomington I think?

Good luck and hope to see pics soon!

One more newbie question: If one were to order custom floor mats, is there a difference between the size and fit of floor mats between a standard 88 carrera, a M491 (turbo look) carrera, and an 88 turbo?

Nope, it's the same. Only targa or cab different.
