what to pay for valve adjustment on 1981 SC
I'd like to get my valves adjusted on my 1981 911SC. How many billable hours does this normally take? Should I get the gaskets, oil, plugs, etc. instead of paying the mechanic's prices for such items? Thank you in advance.

Last time I had my valves adjusted, I think it cost me around $400.00 I try not to keep track
of the expenses though. Ask your mechanic for a quote of labor/parts and just labor. I find parts are cheapest at the local Porsche dealer if you want to get them yourself.

I think most p techs go with about 3 hrs labor + gasket set and maybe a little oil for a straight adjustment. Most guys will reset your mixture afterwards as well.(pre 83 SC's I think)
400 seems high, unless something else was included.

$16.50
Buy the gasket set on eBay. Last time I got the gasket set and an adjustment tool on eBay for the above price. Drain the oil the night before, and then about 5 hours the next day (no beer until finished). All 911 owners should think about learning to do this. It gives you a more intimate look at your engine, and teaches you a great deal. Nothing like the smile on your face when finished. "101 Projects" as well as the Pelican Tech page have some great pictures and instructions.
Just my .02 but dive in to the deep end of the pool.
