Default Clunking sound

A week ago, I had the shocks, a-arm bushing (elephant racing poly-bronze) and the torsion bars replaced on my '87 911. The past few days, I've noticed a clunk that sounds like it's coming from below my AC controls, and it seems to occur just as I am giving gas and releasing the clutch in 1st gear. Tonight, I also noticed that if I am coasting to a stop and tap the brakes, the clunk happens. I looked around under the car, and it all seems fine. I did notice that if I grab the tie rod on the passenger side and really shake it up and down, it makes a small clunk. Is this normal? Where else should I be looking while investigating this noise?

Thanks in advance.

Alex

read: had them replaced

= someone did the work

= take it back and have them diagnos and fix the problem

grabbed tie rod & clunck? you say the noise seems to be from the rear, yet your tie rod is in the front...Tie rods (or for that matter no suspension parts) should NOT clunck....if its the rear it might be sway bar drop link, a loose bolt (after working on the car) poor fitting bushing, brakes, shock, banana bushing, transmission mount, CV joint....
if the front maybe tie rod, ball joint pin, shock, strut, bushing, sway bar or other ...

if some one just worked on it, take it back

It could be the steering rack bolts, or the top strut nut. I'd take it back too.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. By AC controls, I meant the actual ***** between the seats in the passenger compartment. The work was done by a garage, so I'll give them a call.

Thanks again!

Tie rods ae NOT supposed to clunk in any case ...
I would take the car back ASAP and have that garage go over their work.

They must have charged you a pretty penny to do the work,i hope they stand behind it !

Cheers !

Agree with taking it back to the shop and have them check it out.

Just did this exact job but reused old torsion bars and don't have any "clunks." Let us know what it was!

So, last night and this morning, the clunk was happening constantly. Then, this afternoon when I got out of work and was driving to the garage, the car ran perfectly and made no noise. I got to the shop and described the problem, and we spent a few minutes driving around the parking lot trying to get it to happen. Finally, he puts it in reverse and then brakes hard, and voila! Clunk!

Anyway, he put it on the lift and checked everything out. He made sure all the nuts were tight, and he checked the tie rods which were fine. I'm not too clear on the specifics, but he made some adjustment to the elephant racing bushings, and so far the clunk has not come back.

Wild guess: nothing is loose in the trunk or side pockets? The jack might be rolling over in the front. Again, a wild guess.
