Default Question? - Locking Mechanism. . .Please help. . .

I purchased a cherry 1988 Porsche 911 Targa about 1 1/2 months ago & have been fixing little things here & there to get it in tip top shape.

The only thing I've had trouble figuring out is how to fix the door locking mechanism in the center consile. It lights up, but when I push it...nothing. It doesn't unlock or lock the door. Should I buy a new one, even though it still lights up which shows that it's connected? Can it be loose wires?

Would appreciate feedback. Thanks

Below is a picture of what I'm talking about.

Often times the solenoids in the door units fail. Once that happens the door locks will simply not be activated by the button on the console, even though you are getting a lamp to work. With two doors, what you can do is pull both door panels and run continuity checks between that button and each of the doors to see what you are finding. You should be getting voltage to the solenoids. As these cars age metal fatigue starts to become a problem. Metal fatigue--in the wires, themselves. Assume nothing as you do your electrical checks.

IIRC, both doors have to be closed in order for them to lock.
Can you lock/unlock the doors(simultaniously)with the key from the drivers door handle?(doors closed)
Does the car have an alarm?(key-hole inside the drivers door jam)?

88-89 doesn't have the keyed alarm system in the door jam..has a different setup.

Central Locking Unit box does drive out the signal element for that button, as well as the azctual drive signal to lock the door mechanisms.

Make sure you're door switches are good to go..interior lights good 2 go?

Pin 4 (grn/red wire) at CLU is the drive signal to both motors. These voltages can be measured AT the motor,..each door has a microswitch.

Also make sure the Central Locking unit connector is seated properly...
