Default 1971 Porsche 911...engine change...

Hello, my brother is buying a 911 and I found a 1971 for a good price, no rust nor oil leaks, it seems pretty solid. The body has an upgrade kit on it so it looks rather nice...

The questions I have is, I believe the stock motor in it is a 6 cylinder...?
I believe it puts out around 140-150HP and is carborurated...?
It is a 4 speed from what I have seen...

2nd to Last question, can I upgrade the motor in it to a 3.0 or something bigger with more power later for him...? I would be doing the work and just would like to know if a newer larger motor would fit in it...?

Last question, can I swap out the tranny, my brother really likes 5 or 6 speed...?

thank you very much, this is a birthday present for him and we found one for about 10k in good condition...

thank you, !!!

honestly ANYTHING is possible - BUT costs are surprisingly HIGH!!

I would suggest finding a car with a little bigger motor and a transmission you like....its just a lot cheaper in the long run. You might like some "bling" body kit, but once you start swapping motor/tranny you will sink $20k MORE than the car cost in a heartbeat......

Thank you ivangene...I dont have an issue with some cost (maybe not 20k : ) though... I would do the engine swap myself and all mechanical work. Is there is big difference working on a 1971 compared to an 1983...? I know the 71 is carburated and the 83 is injected...?

Honestly buying a rebuilt motor or finding a used one to rebuild would be fun for me...do you have any idea or good sites for motors...? I searched but not sure what is reputable yet...and what a decent price would be...

thanks for you responses...

Yes, it's pretty straightforward to swap in a later motor and a five-speed 915 transaxle.

This board can be a lot of help with finding the easiest versions to swap in. All are possible, but some are more difficult and expensive than others.

I've got a 72 tub, a 95 motor, a 77 transaxle and 86 brakes, for example.

You can pretty much do anything in the world to a torsion bar chassis 911. What you'll run out of is money. I'd seriously take a major step back and assess your current level of knowledge before you jump into something like this. It's not rocket science (I dove into my first 911 back in '80 with a '68 when I was 18), but it's much, much, much more involved that just plugging parts from different years together and having it magically work.

Rebuilding an engine or purchasing a used engine that is good, on top of the $10k you're paying for the car will have you at the $20k mark in no time.

go by an SC ... 3.0 lite .. 5 speed .. and can be had for well under 20 total ... plus you well get a chance to hear and test the motor and gear box .
plus i think you may find Eds figure on the light side .. also keep in mind it is money poorly invested as many popel loking for these cars do not value body kits as much as others
