Post What lube for my 915 tranny on my 1986?

I read with interest the thread on the suggested lube to use on the G50 transmission.
The lube of choice seemed to be Mobil 1 75W-90. (1)Would that be the same for my 915?
(2)Does the Mobil 1 75W-90 can/bottle indicate it is a transmission oil?
Thanks all.
Rob

Hi Rob:

As Mike & Jim suggested, the recommended lube for any 915 (or 901) is the Swepco.

There is nothing better for your gearbox and there are a damned sight worse products,...

Rob,

The synchronizers are different in the G50 and the 915 transmissions. So the G50 responds better with a synthetic like Mobil 1, and as Jim, Mike, and Steve point out, Swepco 201 is the preferred 915 lubricant. If you can hold out until January, Foreign Intrigue in Maine has a January sale with typically the best prices on a gallon of Swepco, around $29 last I looked. Otherwise it's mid-$30 range.

Rob, just to make sure you understand, you have the 915 in your car, I saw mention of the G50 in your post.
As for gear oil in the 915, drum roll please . . ., swepco 201. You can also try pelican parts, they have it for around $32-34 a gallon.

Here's where to get it in the great White North, based on a recent email I got from Swepco:

The closest Field Service Representative that maintains an inventory, and could be of help in answering any questions you might have, lives in Guelph. His name is Steve Couldrey and you may reach him at (519) 836-1823.

I haven't actually talked to him yet - let me know how it goes.

Hey Dwight:

By your question about "even after a break-in?" period...do you think SWEPCO is synthetic?? It's not...it's a high quality mineral oil originally favored by the trucking industry.

Wil:

That was part of my thought, but that's resolved now. Thanx.

Actually what prompted the query, I remembered seeing a thread some time ago on a similar topic on 915's in which an owner had a rebuild and was having some problems. There were a few responses that seemed to think that the owner should move to Swepco AFTER an amount of time with another product. Thought that was interesting and didn't know if it was a popular belief. Having just had a 915 rebuild, I'll start with swepco with the info from this thread.

Thanx,
