Post C4 filters

Since a few months I'm a happy owner of a beautiful kept C4 '89 70.000 km (42.000 miles). The car (if it's the correct word for a Porsche ?!) was held as it should be, was driven for only few months a year and the former owner never missed an engine service.
A few weeks ago I ran out of fuel on the most stupid way (if there is any other?), since then the engine tends to hesitate when I accelarate. This only happens from time to time and there is no real pattern. I know the former owner never had this kind of problem.
A friend of mine told me the hesitation could be linked to the fuel filter as the engine consumed the last drop of petrol together with some dirt particles out of the almost 13 year old petrol tank.

Any ideas please ? Thanks.

Thierry.
