Default Sooty Exhaust Pipe

This is probably an elementary question, but here goes.

After a good long drive (50 + miles) I'll run my index finger around the inside of the exhaust pipe. More often than not I'll come away with a little soot...not enough to blacken my whole finger, but enough to notice.

Does this indicate rich running? No smoking, no oil leaks, no bad smells...engine seems fine but I'm just wondering.

Thanks!

Perhaps you could borrow this from me .... it even takes some samples in case you are interested in further (over) analysis. Ahh ! For my friend, I'll throw it in for free. Just pay me shipping.

Amar, I think I'll take you up on your kind offer!

Should I ask my car to bend over and cough?
