Not exactly in the NYC area but west- in corner of the PA/NJ/NY region near Port Jervis, NY is rt. 97. It hugs a cliff 300 or so feet up and runs along the Delaware river just north of Port J its called the Hawks Nest- its the location used for a lot of car commercials- very scenic and a blast to drive.

Also rt 6 west out of Milford, PA has been listed on the 10 top scenic rides in the USA.

In East NJ and NY state is the Pallisades Parkway / rt 9 (I think?) some nice sections there.

happy motoring...

I think it's tough considering the pop. density where we live to find a good/great driving road -having said that, on your side of the river, i do like the Palisades Parkway to Sebago lakes, seven lakes or Bear mountain - some truly wicked twisties @ the bottom of the Bear Mtn road - but beware -it is state park, multi use, and I guess troopers all around (as well as some bikers and walkers) - but at least you can clear the plugs somewhat on the way up and down the palisades & then enjoy the turns and scenery up there. As i have learned - and has been said on this board ad infinitum -
<img src="graemlins/soapbox.gif" border="0" alt="[soapbox]" /> the only way to truly experience the car is on a closed track . join PCA now and be ready for spring.
enjoy

I really like the FDR Drive heading southbound from around midtown to the battery - you can really launch the car and get some air the way the road surface buckles and surges there.

hehehe

I like the Palisades Parkway. Another good one is the Northern State Parkway on Long Island, but there's usually a lot of traffic. I had one good game of tag with a black 964 coupe and a silver 996 cab (do they make 996s in any other colors?) westbound on the LIE over this last summer.

That's one thing that has always ticked me off about living in manhattan -- You can't just 'go for a drive.' It's always a trek to the GWB and then the palisades, or somewhere else. Not to mention the 6 bucks if I actually want to go home at the end.

Anyway, suggestions are definitely welcome.

Another vote for the Hawks Nest past Port Jervis...take it up to Narrowsburg and have lunch. Good place to canoe or Kayak from on the Delaware...lots of class III water to play in and not feel like your going to kill yourself.

Nobody's mentioned the Saw Mill Parkway. I had the opportunity to drive its entire length one day last summer, unfortunately in the A4 (business trip) not the 911. Great road, still fun in the Audi, and not even very congested at the southern end in the late afternoon.

Somebody mentioned the area around Mendham, NJ. Actually, much of northern NJ has good roads. Go up Rte. 23 from 80, and keep going way north of Butler. There are also great roads around Boonton Township, NJ, but the town itself is way too heavily patrolled.

The saw mill is great...

The taconic once you get north of route 6 is AWESOME....watch out for coppers though.

All the roads around here are pretty awesome now that I think of it...I really appreciate them after living in NJ for a semester of college.

(I'm at the upper edge of westchester county, not far from exit 6 off 684, also known as the end of the saw mill on the northern edge)..

Route 301 in Putnam County- take the Saw Mill to Taconic, and then about 20 miles up is Route 301 East to Carmel NY. Sunday mornings (just watch out for the rice-rockets).

Yes, route 301 in Putnam is terrific (not so much fun in the winter), but a nice drive in temperate weather. Another way to get there (especially from the Jersey side of the Hudson) is to take the PIP to the Bear Mountain Bridge, after crossing the bridge, hang a left and take route 9 into Cold Spring. At Cold Spring hang a right and follow the hill up through Nelsonville to Route 301. I travel this route whenever I have to go up to the Putnam County Courthouse in Carmel.

Another nice drive is the back roads to Lime Rock, CT. This will bring you to Millerton (still in New York, but just on the border with CT).

Happy New Year!

Thumbs up

Route 22 from N White Plains up, winding past the reservoir, thru Armonk is a favorite of mine. Also, the previously mentioned Seven Lakes Drive in Rockland County from Suffern to Bear Mtn
is awesome (as long as you don't get behind a real pokey driver..it's only two lanes!
