Default exhaust/ cat heat barrier

Last year, I pulled my axles for regular service, and found that the left side cvs were loose, and looked like they were worse off than the right side.

A discussion with Iceman concluded that the catalytic converter/ catbypass could be the cause of radiant heat that is breaking down the grease and causing left side axle wear.

Does anyone know of a good heat barrier that I can use with my cat bypass pipe? The pipe itself is not a header, so there are two layers of steel. But the inlet pipe is a single layer tube, and I think the heat there is what could be getting too hot.

a clogged cat will cause more heat too - if it's original - they have a set service life. I've seen old - original - clogged cats glow like a cherry ball. The later carrera cats had an attached heat shield - although many broke off and caused the exhaust to rattle.

Header wrap will just accelerate the demise

The original cat died going through downtown Oakland many years ago, when the distributor bushings failed.

The replacement cat lives in the garage mostly. This is for the cat-bypass actually.

DB - thanks! That's exactly what I need!

Rus,
Be sure to buy the high-temp clear coat and "paint" the wrapped unit very well. This will seal the wrap.

If you don't the wrap will collect water and rust the bypass pipe. With the miles you do, it will avoid a headache later!
