Default 911SC or 944S2

This is my first post for 2011 so a big greeting to all.

Here is my dilemma.

I own a tidy 944S2 with about 280Km on the odometer. She runs well, fresh belts/water pump just done etc. She'is a joy to drive and thrills me as a sometime DD & sometime track car.

The other P. car is a 1980 British import 911SC (Guards Red/Whale tail/smiley - original colour was Petrol Blue), the body is OK but needs a tidy up. Have done an engine top-end refresh, cam tensioner repair, new clutch, brake master cylinder & front brake cylinders just done. There is more to do to bring her up to scratch without making her a garage queen. She shows about 80,000 miles on the odometer but I reckon that is far too low given the age of the car.

Both cars are enjoyed for different reasons. The SC is a real go cart, full of huff 'n puff and we all know they are a great drive. The S2 is far more balanced and benign.

Have owned both for about 3 years, both cars are now well understood and their foibles tolerated.

Car storage is limited (2-car garage/workshop, 5-car family and standing costs for both cars are about the same. I use a Cherokee as a DD and tow car.

Which car should I sell?

SC/S2? SC/S2? SC/S2? SC/S2?

Maybe sell both and source a sweet local 3.2/964 with the proceeds and start again.

Sheesh - what a choice! Biased opinions from the aircooled fraternity welcome.

I might also post to the water-cooled guys and see what they say.

Cheers from down under.

What do you think our/their answers will be. The SC will retain more value, IMO.

Hi Ed - thanks for that.

That is the way I will probably end up.

There are fewer S2 coupes for sale down here so she could be easier to sell. Have really enjoyed reading about your work on Ruby - thanks.

Cheers

No problem. Besides, anyone can drive a 944, only us annointed folks can handle a 911. Good luck!

PS- How have you faired down in Melbourne with the weather in Oz recently? Talk about hammered! My wife and I were going to look at a trip down there this year, but we may wait until next to let you folks dry out.

Melbourne is OK really it hit 40 Deg C early this week just like SoCal. Best time to visit is anytime really, no snow/ice/blizzards, the odd really hot day. The further north you travel this time of year the hotter it gets.

Victoria had plenty of rain 2 weeks ago. The floodwaters are now in the NW of the state and still cover an area 50 X 90 kms and are moving slowly inland (go figure) across flat farnland to the Murray River then out to sea over the next few months. The country is so flat it takes that time to drain. You will finds the natives very friendly.

Hi Ed,

Victoria has had a beating over the last few weeks and Queensland copped a massive typhoon/hurricane/cyclone last night. A few small towns were trashed there with no loss of life so far, 3 babies were even born in the temporary shelters setup to house people in low lying and unprotected areas in the north.

There is still a flood 50 X 90 Kms wide gradually working its way inland (go figure) across flat farm country to the Murray River and then to the ocean in a month or two.

Anytime is a good time to visit Victoria but we get the odd 40 deg C day in summer just like SoCal. It is good Porsche country, the native are friendly and the beer is cold. No sleet/snow/blizzards.

I have owned many 44's and while they are wonderful cars, there is nothing like a 911. To me this choice is an easy one. I would say this in the 944 forum too.

But honestly, if space is the problem I would sell the Jeep!

Hi Jay - space is not that tight that I would sell the workhorse, she is too good to sell. Though the Jeeper is a thirsy bugger, it does all that I ask and sometimes more. She will tow a 4-wheel car trailer with the 944 or 911 onboard pls tools, jack, 4 track tyres and gear for a weekend. All up weight is around 4000 kilos.

I get top bidding rights on the garage and workshop for my babies. My thoughts seemed to have gelled - the S2 goes.

Cheers from Downunder
