Chapel Thrill

Spring has sprung in the south and I opend the fresh air vent ( all the way to right). The fan was sluggish and sputtered ( fan setting 1 and 2 nothing. 3 worked for a while). Then fan blew out smoke.
I know this is a simple problem (i know, turn fan off which worked) but what do you guys think is the problem and the cure?

That fan has been known to catch fire.
