Engine mods: I like and can be done tastefully (and accepted) in the Porsche community.
Paint color change:Kiss of death in my book and the community.

Somebody will have to have this car, but discriminating buyers will see it and price it accordingly.
I would love to drive it though...

My friend's RS I just mentioned in the other thread..........Sepia Brown OE to Grand Prix White around 1980. Had to have saved that car from death back when no one really cared about an RS.

Now, other than the bucks, would you rather look at Sepia Brown or Grand Prix White?

As far as driving an RS, of which I've had the pleasure to work on probably five, from POS to concours; the beauty of them is that it's only a digit in a serial number. Anyone can make one, and make it much, much better than what the factory delivered 38 years ago.

For sure, "no-sale" brown. For my quarter mil, I would want a nice car, meaning original. Otherwise I have no need to shop in that rarified air. Yes, a tribute car would serve my purposes.

FWIW the broker of this RS is a very good friend and I have discussed the current asking price with him. IMHO, it is most likely still too high. I think it could be sold in the $230-35K range.

I agree this car should be put back to Signal Yellow from Irish Green and the Touring bits put back on. All those parts are available with the car too.

I do think if someone was in the market for this model, this one would be fun to have as it is now for a season or two and drive it with abandon not really concerned about stone chips or concours.

Brian,
Any idea how many RS's came with a SR, is that factory installed. If so must be quite rare. I'll agree with the sentiment on paint but 15K worth of paint might be a deal breaker on a $45K car probably not so much on a $250k car.

Strong money for that car, but I bet there is a buyer out there above $225K.
I was recently in England and saw some incredible RS tribute cars that were beautiful---even though they were tribute cars and not exact reproductions, they still wanted very strong money--in excess of 80K.

Hi Phil,

I was snowed in today so I sat down and counted up all the Carreras with the 650 option code and came up a total of 339 cars with a sunroof. Probably not an exact # as I may have missed a few but pretty accurate. This was a popular option. I know I like using the sunroof in my car.

I don't understand the point of modifying the car as such and then driving it like a collectible. Why put a roll bar in a $275,000 car unless you're going to use it?

The current owner aquired the car in '93 when these cars were at a low point value wise. He modified it to suit his taste without much reguard for collectibility as it was not much a collectible at that point.

Again, I think it would be fun to have and drive as it is and then take it back at some point in the future. You could even keep the 471 body work and interior (those awful seats need to go though) but repaint it to Signal Yellow and have a fantastic car IMHO.

When I did the Bondurant advanced class ten years ago, there was a guy there in a real RS racking up some track hours on his own. I admired both the car and the dude for using the car to its potential.

Years ago whilst I was racing, My team had a test/tune day at Summit Point. Our invited participants were Hans Jr., Hurley Heywood, along with whelden from G&W who brought a stock 2.7RS. Our 965 IMSA surpercar, and a chevy/Spice driven by Wayne Taylor. All took turns(in the drizzly rain) and man it was surprising to see these cars maintaining there track position. The wet track may have slowed things a bit, but it sure did highlight the manners of the cars. You could see the ground effects working on the prototype; shooting water 50feet high, then the 965 with a similar/less dramatic "suck", and then an RS at full speed with Hans at the wheel really doing the same. Driven as intended, they are quick cars needless to say. At some point in testing, Derek Bell drove all the above cars as well. Fun.

Tom,
That's funny, we may have been looking at same car. I remember seeing an RS for sale in pano around that time, seemed like a lot of money. I ended up with a 40K mile perfect 72 S for $8400, that I sold to a buy 914 race car, DOH!
