Default Leather Maintenance

I've read a lot of posts regarding what leather treatments are best for Porsche leather. One post in particular says Porsche seals it leather with a water based polymer and that oil based treatments like Connellys, etc are ineffective and possibly harmful. It says that Porsche leather needs to be hydrated not oiled. As an owner of a 1988 car I wonder if Porsche used water based polymers 23 years ago? The leather I have is in good shape, a little light cracking but looks like a good leather treatment would make a world of difference. Any suggestions would sure be appreciated.

Are you sure those folks that mentioned polymer seal weren't referring to newer 911's?

I've had my 89 for all of 9 months now and have used Leatherique products. It seems to help the condition and have not noticed any adverse effects.

I've used Hide Food and not noticed any ill effects.

Recently I came across a hand treatment called "Working Hands", and the stuff is so good I think I'll try it on the leather seats. It's amazing.

+ 1, I do this treatment once a year. For regular maintenance (once a month .. depending on usage, since I have other cars) I use Griot's leather cleaner or Sonax leather cleaner with excellent results.
