Default door rust

I apologize for all the questions lately, but in my hunt for a 911 I am checking out all the local cars and trying to learn what items can be lived with and what are the signs to walk/run away...

With that out of the way... the latest consideration is a '74 Targa. I've read all about the 74s and the potential 2.7 issues. However, I really like the Targa style.

However, the drivers side door has got some pretty serious rust issues:

What would it take to fix that, or at least keep it from spreading?

This is the full listing for the car:

WTF! Why is the seller called "rustfreecalicars"???

That's got to ring warning bells.

Just remember, the rust you can see is only a fraction of the rust you can't see. With a Targa the floor is the only thing that holds the front to the back. If there's rust hidden anywhere in the sills etc, the car will flex in the middle.
I say this because I had the same issue with a 74 targa myself. If it were me, based on past experience, I'd walk away.

If you are still keen, get a PPi and have an expert do a rust inspection.

Good luck

That is a pretty unusual spot for rust. If that is the extent of it, it would not be a hard weld repair.

However, I agree with psychoideas... what other rust may be lurking? That grey paint ahead of the rubber sill cover suggests there may be something covered up.

Porsche started the full body galvanizing in 1976. Although even galvanized cars can have rust issues, it certainly helps a bit. Any of the earlier cars must be very, very carefully assessed for rust. I have seen many a car over on Pelican where it looked great and then the owner started discovering all sorts of sins. It is amazing what gets covered up.

Finally, I would add that this is fully perforated rust through, in a spot that is visible everytime you get into an out of the car. The fact that it was left and not attended to suggests something about the (lack of) ownership care. Not conclusive, but certainly a valid data point.

I went and looked at the link...

That car is WAY overpriced. The suspension pan is shot, although the floors look good. Nice steering wheel, but too bad about the tears in the leather. Springplate bushings are toast, which means likely the entire suspension is due for a refre$h. For that kind of coin, you can get a decent SC that will not have those issues, or at least not most of them.

I will say that the seller did a decent job of disclosing issues in the photos.

tha tthing is a real POS for 15G .. more like a 3-5G car .. rust bursting through everywhere.. suspension shot .. just totally worn out and neglected/.
for 15G you should get a very decent SC or maybe even a Carrera if your lucky that would need less work than that thing.
