Default Intermittent Whine from Engine Compartment- CD unit?

I have a 1980 911 SC used as my daily driver. Yesterday, I noticed a fairly loud intermittent whining sound, mostly at idle.

I suspect the CD Ignition unit is on its way out. The sound seemed to come from that area. Car still runs fine.

Any ideas? Thanks.

remove the belt, see if the whine goes away - I was chasing a faint whine and while my head was in there I spit on the belt...and it stopped - love the easy fixes

also a long screwdriver or short broom handle pressed against your ear tight enough to close your ear will transfer the noises into your ear drum... try that too
