Default Potential new buyer ... quick question

Hey guys -

I am looking to spend $25k buying a used 996. I have read through all of the forums and am aware of the IMS issue (scares the pants off me) and the need for a proper PPI before purchase, etc. One of the things I am struggling with is the wide variation of asking prices for different years / mileage.

The car would be my "main" car, as my wife drives a 2010 X5 right now. It wouldnt get more than 5-8k miles per year (train car) and if the snow gets bad (like today); I can just walk to the train station like I do right now.

The base question:
1. How to discount a high mileage car (70k) vs low mileage (30k); how much is that worth
2. How to discount a 2000 year vs a 2002
3. Are there any bands that people think about; i.e. 2000 with 90k miles is worth XX% less than a 2000 with 50k miles.
4. Obviously proper documentation is critical to make sure I dont wake up one day to an IMS issue .... as my wife would kill me if that happens.

Thanks!

OH - on that note - protection with either replacing it or a warranty is your solution..... not to leave you hanging

Fair enough; just a frightening thought to literally have the car destoyed overnight.

Thanks mate!

Excellence Magazine had a great article on replacing the ims bearing. You should pre-emptively get to know a trustworthy mechanic and do hand excercises for all the check writing and stern letter writing you're going to do if you plan on being a water cooled Porsch owner.

Okay so since we are jumping on the " banned" wagon .. if you have to report to your wife about your car , the 996 is probably the car for you .. real men drive 911s .

But on a more serious note the 996 guys will give you tonnes of info .. i find the early 996 model ( 3.4 lite) are not as nearly as desireable as they look like boxsters and have very much the same engine . I would whole heartedly suggest replacing that bearing as a premptive strike .. we all drinking different colour kool aid and all will defend our car, as many 996 owners feel this is an overblown issue .... maybe it is, but i think if you replace your clutch and could have replaced that bearing , and you don't .. well you get what you deserve is all ......

I'll be right back after me an ed get back from our week long ban

What's with all the chatter about bans? Its not like you questioned his sexual orientation for buying a 996..... If he were buying a Boxster, then that would be a different story and worth a week long vacation.

Buy a 996 Turbo instead, I did. No IMS or RMS issues with those motors.

that is true .. the turbo/GT3 motor does not have this issue .. but they being said the coolant pipes on those models are becoming a nightmare of their own and can destroyy our car in a totally different manner .. wouldn't be surprised if we saw a recall on those motrs as safety is a big issue when the coolant all expells under your rear wheels..

Let me put it this way. Buy a nice Civic for $25k, you'll get more for your money. When I bought the 993 recently, I drove at least 6 $28-35k 996's. Talk about soulless, mostly unloved cars. Came back to my senses and focused on 993's. I know there are nice 996's out there. My guess is $25k won't buy one.
