TORONTO - TORONTO — Firefighters are battling a six-alarm blaze which has gutted a historic building in downtown Toronto.
Two firefighters were injured when they fell through a section of roof. A third was also injured but refused treatment and returned to fight the blaze, said Capt. Mike Strapko.
Emergency crews were called to the scene around 4 a.m. Monday.
The building, once home to the stately Empress Hotel, made headlines in April when a section of its facade collapsed onto the sidewalk.
City council voted the building a heritage building in July, just days after the owner, Mumbai-based Lalani Group, applied for an application to demolish it.
The three-storey building, in the heart of Yonge St.'s shopping district, was built in 1888.
Yonge St. has been closed between Dundas and Gerrard Sts. while fire crews work at the scene.
I think i snapped a shot of this building while at the car show at Yorkville. it caught my attention as a historic building in the middle of Yonge. What a shame .. will post it up if I can find it ..

Well, I could post pictures of my Spec Miata in the shop and how I'm pulling it apart for a freshening. (Only Porsche news of the day is that my RS America may being making a trip sorta back home, at least as far as England.)
