Looking for a G50 3.2 Coupe.
I've been drawn to either 87/88/89 for many years now. It's time to take action.
Must be a coupe, all mechanicals sorted, preference for non moonroof, Burgundy/Tan /black/Cynamon, etc,,,,but not grey interior. Body color dark green, bluish, Black, or white....I'm trying to avoid Red since I own two other Red cars. I have looked at 928's, 930's etc...but 911's keep coming into my dreams....if you guys know of a POA/RL/PP owner interested on a sale to a car guy , whom will take good care of a fine example, please send him/her my way..Thanks.

'87 thru '89 cars are really very good but to ignore the other years of the 3.2 would be a big mistake especially if you have one in pristine shape. When you are in the market for a classic care, please buy the car for it's mechanical condition and not for it's technical specification. Like every newbie, I too started off with the usual question: " Hello, I am in the market for a '87 thru '89 model year 911 ....
Look where I ended up....

In a 2009 C4S! If only we could all be so lucky!
Seriously, if you run across a pre-87 car you like, don't think twice about considering it. And good luck in your search!

G50 x 915
I am not ruling out a car with a 915 tranny. My preference is a G50, and the reason is because several mechanics (Shalayla here in Houston and Moorespeed in Austin included) told me the G50 is a vastly improved tranny over the 915, and if I could manage, I should give preference to a G50. I am not knowledgeable enough about Porsche cars to ignore these guys, whom spend most of their time messing with Porsche trannys, for both racing and private cars. Cheers.

I grew up driving cable pull clutches (vw bug, 356, 914 and on and on). It's part of the experience for me, in a perverse sort of way. I like the way I know too if the clutch is engaged, or not, and precisely when. BTW my old clutch disc looks pretty dang new, even after well over 150K miles. I should take a pic and post it for you guys.

Get a copy of Peter Zimmerman's book on purchasing a used 911. It was the single best resource I found when I was looking for a car for my wife. She ended up with a 1988 Carrera and couldn't be happier. The book is a great read. Also try and attend a Porsche gathering and just talk to the owners. Everyone loves discussing and comparing P-cars and you'll get the same kind of good advice you are receiving in this thread. Good luck.

Race Car
joedud, very nice post. Peter's book is a great resource, and the owner-community is a HUGE part of Porsche ownership. All well stated in your first post as a paying member. Very nice.
How about posting some pics of your brides 88, we love pictures.

No, Ed is just a little slow. As stated, open your horizons and look at other Carreras in the '84-86 years too. As woot attests, he found a fine '86, and is extremely happy. He also started here with a similar request to yours.
Is the G50 an improvement? Yes, but not enough to pass up a 915 car in better shape.
Is the 915 a bad trans? No! There were 10's of thousands built and drove many racing cars that did pretty well around the world.

salukijac,
The car will be driven on the twisties near Texas Hillcountry, hopefully 100 + miles a week. Don't want a garage queen. The tranny is not a show stopper, or a deal killer if the mechanicals are sorted, int/ext are in great shape, and with nice wheels and color combo. Thanks guys.
