Question on purchase of used 911

Question on purchase of used 911
I am looking into a 2002 Porsche 911 Carerra Cabriolet with 84K miles for $22,800.
It seems to be in great shape other than the stereo which seems to be a problem with volume control. I assume, I can replace that with a better stereo.
I was told there is some known engine failure for this 3.6L engine which basically requires to have the engine replaced which has the same part which they did away 2 years ago.
Any advice of what are the known problems for this car.
I do work on cars mainly Mercedes, BMW, Audis and VW. I used to have a 1983 944.
Based on the feedback, i was going to have this car checked out by a Porsche shop as I am not familiar with this 911.
Any guidance here would be great.
Thanks

Post this Q on the "water cooled" section on the 996 board
be ready to get a few flames because it is a VERY over talked about issue - might want to read some of the posts too... search IMS or Engine Failure
That said with a little prventative work the 02' 996's are great cars!

yeah no kidding .. that IMS goes there is no repair .. you are DONE ... most giys are reaplcing the IMS bearing when they do the clutch with the ceramic unit available from Charles at LN or Jack Raby.
but go do a search on the 996 forum .. only real Porsches here

That's funny .. at our local get together we have all kinds of cars and we are all giving each other the "gears" and it's always good fun .. I am mister exploding airbox ... some guys left trails of coolant at the track and they shut it down , others have had IMS issues .. but your right it can get carried away if your not good friends .. We were all watching the local UCR chapter deal with ther elections and positions so we decided to have our own " chair" positions .. funny enough I got the " **** disturber " chair and was banished to the porta potty ..

OMG!! **** Disturber
I worked with this old timer engineer (you know the type, can make stress calculations in his head ) e and I worked in a little room together for about 6 months and he would tell stories to me... THAT is one of my favorites!!
We have 2 tracks (small/fun, larger more serious) and at the small one I have been called the "Hooligan" as I like to push people to spin their cars

I REALLY have to get my 911 done and out on the road... It sounds like you guys have a lot of fun! Maybe I could be the "WYIT Chair"?
(P.S. I met a guy a month ago and say him again on a Christmas party on Friday who has been out to a bunch of the GTG's and he specifically noted that "Iceman" was very witty!)
Much more fun-sounding then all the election drama at UCR a month ago...
Sorry for going off-topic. For the original poster: 996s can be great cars. Like ALL cars, they can have issues, but as been noted here, there are multiple good solutions available. A good PPI is essential. You may want to post your location in Canada and see what shops people recommend for the PPI. Good luck!!
