gary,
I changed from whatever was in the box to the regular red-line 75-90 without much change in the way it shifted, then I discovered I should have used 75-90ns. I changed again with less than 500 miles on the old red-line and did see a vast improvement. Remember to get the 75-90ns if you go with red-line.I had a problem with mobil one on an older copo camaro and went through a set of 411 gears in 300 miles.I
had purchased a complete pumkin from Ford
to put in the Doug Mosier rear end and don,t
know still what was the cause.Mobil one, Ford
or Doug Mosier. Red line for me.
411 gear in 300 miles.

I did in fact use the 75w-90ns combined with 1oz of their rec additive. The additive was in lieu of sub 1qt of 75-90ns for 1qt of Lt Weight Gear. The Lt Weight gear was not avail at any of my local Redline dealers. This sub was at the direction of Redline tech support.

Keith:

I used approx 3.5 qt's of Redline 75W-90 NS plus 1oz of Redline Friction Modifier/Break In Additive. The Friction Modifier was in substitued for 1qt of their Light Weight Gear Oil. Again, this was at the direction of Redline's tech support

Whats the difference between 75-90 and 75-90 NS? Are they both synthetic but Redline instead of Mobil?\?

Look, it's been proven time and time again...Swepco (Dino) works well in the older type gearboxes like 901s and 915s, this, I have experienced myself as well...and in my humble opinion - is the only choice, for the older type gearboxes.

Mobil-1 and Redline both make a great product, both seem to work VERY well in the G-50 type gearboxes.

To me, these are two very clear-cut issues...I can all but guarantee some disatisfaction if you use synthetic gear lubes in older gear boxes and if you use dino lube in newer type boxes...this in NORMAL day to day street use.

However, I have heard of improvements in the newer type G-50 gearboxes when using Swepco in a high heat (track) situation.

I currently use Mobil-1 in my G-50 with PLENTY of track use. Since draining out whatever was in there at 51k miles and filling with Mobil-1, I get a strage "nick" when shifting from 2nd to 3rd that I can eliminate by exaggerating my "pause" between shifting from 2nd to 3rd...this only on track, after getting nice and warmed up.

This may very well support the "Swepco is okay" issue in a G-50, during track use.

I am going to give it one more track event then change over to Redline 75-w/90 to see if it eliminates this strange and new found peculiararity...is that a valid word??

If it continues to "nick" 3rd or whatever it is "nicking" w/Redline...I may just have to try the Swepco route, but will wait for warm weather as Fall is quickly approaching here in Va. I truly believe Swepco in a G-50 will have some inherent issues during cold weather.

I can honestly say that in MOST cases, changing to a different lube in your gearbox WILL NOT cure any problems you are having. It is likely to smooth out shifting, etc. But it's not likely to resolve any issues that require a mechanics attention.

I know I might be out of place, I have a 996 built in 1999. Is it safe to assume that I have Mobil 1 gear oil in my transmission since we have Mobil 1 in the crankcase?
