Default Slippery 911

Hello everyone. I haven't posted much at all but I read the 911 rennlist forum at least 5 times a week. My girl friend is not happy about it by the way. Anyway I though I would ask for some help. I live in Los Angeles and have a stock 86 carrera. Pics attached. Its an awesome car to say the least. So we got our first decent rain on friday night and I thought it would be a great idea to carve the canyons (mullholland hwy) against/with my friend who has a 2010 carrera.

My tires are about 4 months old on the front (pirrelli) and bf goodrich 2 months old on the back. Approx 34psi front and 36psi in the back. Getting on the frwy and not really pushing it on the on ramp I did about a 540 luckily there was no damage/collision/cars coming. Later when I got to mullholland I was slipping all over the place, to the left and right. I picked up a friend but who weighs about the same and that didn't help much. Any way I gave up and went home.

Btw for all the 3.2 owners the last time I did this at night (no rain)I was riding his *** the whole way.

Sorry I know this is long. So I was wondering what the reasons would be for this? I appreciate the time and help, thanks.

New tires need break-in and 34psi/36psi (cold measurements, I assume) may be too much pressure for 16".

A first rain will also be very slippery as the rain just sits on the oil that is on the roadway. After a heavy rain, you will notice you have better traction as the crud has washed away.

What kind of Pirellis and BFGs are you running?

You're using different tires on the front and rear? Methinks that may be one of the problems.

Did you get the 911 aligned when you had the new tires installed?

Also, I'm sure that you know about the "don't lift" mantra which comes into play even more on wet roads, especially if it is wet after a prolonged time frame when oil has built up on the surface.

34/36 in the rain should be fine, as should mismatched tires. Based on the pics they look fairly all-seasony, but hard to tell. So your friend had no traction issues, or were his covered up by traction-control? Some performance tires just don't do well in the rain (I had Pirellis a long time ago and they were pretty slippery), so that'd be my guess.

Personally I think mismatched tires on a 911 is very bad .. but that is just my .02c from what I have read, I am no expert ... oil on the road is an issue but only for the first fwe minutes as the oil and water can mix. in a fairly steady rain most of it would be gone . Any motorcyle rider knows this all to well . T the end of the day this is a 911 they are hard to drive fast and harder to drive fast in the rain ..

The true test of your smoothness - driving in the rain, its easy to loop it, push or slide right off the pavement.

That said, tires = #1 suspect, alignment/suspension #2 and the road surface was a constant for you both so I will rule that as an = challenge, his car worked, yours didnt

What size are your rims?

What size are your tires?

If the tires are not a good size match for the rims you could have a bad tire profile on the road.

All the above.....

Pressures
Mis-matched tires
Potentially specific models of tires you have
Is your suspension right
While we've had a lot of rain lately, Friday night was indeed the first in a while

Check your sway bars. Broken mount can be an "eye" opener.

And don't lift

The 2010 will not only be equipped with ABS, but also PSM/TC.

In the WET, even any minor level of roadbed slipperiness, your '86 will be NO MATCH for a 2010 with TC and PSM. The 2010 will be, might be, selectively braking individual wheels (automatically, no driver intervention) with no brake light indication to you as a "que".

Plus the overall suspension geometry, driving/handling dynamics, of the 2010 has been dramatically improved vs your '86.

Could he be a C4..?

Suggestion. Take your car to a DE event if you want to learn how to drive it.

Yes, please take it to the track. You will kill yourself and maybe others. Trust me, I speak from experience. I had a big spin out on Sunset Blvd where UCLA is when I started driving my P-car. Almost died. I was VERY lucky.

Since then I go to the track every 2 months.

I go with these guys: www.speedventures.com
