Default New DE-Prepped 911 Carrera Owner

After lurking on these boards for 4 years, my wife and I have finally purchased our first Porsche 911 Carrera. It's a 1988, prepared for DE and purchased from Blue Grass Porsche of Louisville, KY. Their staff treated us well, and we got the car for a very reasonable price. We look forward to my first track outing in the car at Putnam Park (Indiana) next May 2011.

BMW's are great cars and there might be some things you miss.... but I dont think you will find all the things a Porsche has to offer in a BMW for sure!!

Thanks! It's quick with a 3.4-L race-prepped motor.

Thanks! We still have our E36 4-door M3, but I retired it from tracking this year. The '88 is our new track beast!

First thing I would do would be to lose those heavy RUF wheels. Reduce your unsprung weight and rotating mass with a pair of FUCH's or similar forged light wheel

Sorry. Love the RUF wheels. I need them to cover the huge brakes on the car. The car came with an extra set of Kinesis forged wheels with BFG DOT race tires for track lapping. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Of course, Ricster is correct. The RUF wheels look great but are heavy. If you are saying you intend to use the RUFs on the street and the Kinesis on the track, that sounds right.
Don't know what you mean by "I need them to cover
the huge brakes".
You mentioned GT brakes in your other thread. What do you mean?

BTW, couldn't quite tell from the pictures, but is that a sunroof delete car? Very cool if so. Very rare. Don't think I've ever seen a sunroof delete '88.

The items I listed were from a transcript from the previous owners hand-written list. The brakes are over-sized for the car. They're multi-piston calipers fr/rr with large-diameter drilled rotors. They are Porsche brakes. I'm not sure if the 16-in Fuchs would fit over these monster brakes. There's very little clearance with the 17s now.

It has a sunroof, but I have not figured out where the button is to open it, or if the previous owner removed the switch gear for the sunroof? Our '88 is a well-sorted race-prepped DE car that's streetable, but it's not liveable enough for daily use. The exhaust is so loud our house shakes when the car's idling in our driveway. My wife rode in it for the first time this afternoon, and her comment was, "I hope you're happy with this car?!" (I guess she won't ride in it again unless it's an emergency?). I'm sure I will be thrilled once I get the car on the track!

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm coming from well-balanced cars like the Type FD Rx7 and E36 M3. I've not driven our new-to-us '88 Carrera at speed though the turns around here, but it feels very good within its limits. I'm sure once I get it out on the track I'll get the back end moving around with the throttle. Brakes have been the weak point with my old Mazda FD and current BMW E36 M3. Not so with our '88's brake setup. It'll be an exciting 2011 DE season!

Thanks, John! I already am, and I'm just tooling around it, enjoying all the befuddled glares I get from all sorts of people in their vehicles.
