Hi.
I plan to buy a 2-owner 1988 Carrera with 58K miles from Blue Grass Porsche of Louisville KY. The current owner bought the car from the original owner with 11K miles. At 50K miles the motor was enlarged to 3.4-L by Farmer Automotive (Indy). The car belonged to a long-time PCA instructor and club racer with the KYPCA.
Here's the list of the car's race prep upgrades: front oil cooler, Porsche "big red" brakes, front splitter, 8/9 x 17 Ruf wheels, 8/9 x 17 Kinesis wheels with BFG track tires, brake ducts, battery in smuggler box, short 4th/5th gear ratios, Quaiffe LSD, large torsion bars, delrin bushings, Bilstein race shocks, race clutch, Farmer Automotive 3.4-L motor (250 hp, higher-rpm redline), mass flow sensor, custom chip, no A/C, custom dual exhaust.
I'm a PCA instructor myself (for the Central Indiana and Mid Ohio Regions). I'd plan for 4-to-5 DEs per season at Putnam Park and Mid Ohio. The cars I've had on track are a heavily-modded Type FD Rx7, and my current E36 4-door M3 (now retired from track driving). This car will be my first Porsche.
Thoughts and comments are appreciated before I head to Louisville this afternoon!
Thanks.

Nice looking car.
As you probably know, when you start modifying a car, things can get tricky. Generally, the value of the car drops for example. The quality of the work is variable. The resale will be more difficult etc etc etc.
It looks to me to be a DE car that you can drive on the street if that's your objective. I doubt it's a race car even though the previous owner may have been a racer. If it were a race car it would be in a GT class and things can get very expensive in that area.
Track cars are not selling well currently. There are a LOT of cars like this available currently. Lots more supply than demand. Don't over-pay. It won't be the easiest car to sell when that time comes.
Get a real pro to look over the car for you. Get a compression check. Check closely for body damage.
Good luck.

I like it. I would be concerned about the engine work. As Dave Morris states, you have to consider who did the work. I would certainly want to know what was done upon teardown, what P&Cs were used to acheive 3.4 level. At 3.4, twin ignition starts to become a factor.

do you have a Porsche mechanic you trust. If this is the car you want, have your guy spend some serious time checking it out... see what he says.
I would have no trouble buying a car my mechanic gave the thumbs up to AFTER he checked it out - no way of knowing what you have unless you dig in
best of luck

Back from the dead. Have enjoyed my first DE season last year (2011) with the '88 Carrera. I want another 911 that we can use for weekend wine tours.
Always loved the 964 RSAs (first 911 love actually).

This one's 2250 miles from home.
Anyone near BMW Northwest in Tacoma WA willing to do a walk around on the car?
