Engine before and after

I kept promising to show my engine after the 'big' service. Finally got around to taking a couple photos.
Anyway, my car had 'the drip'. Okay, a few of them, but after pulling the motor, resealing lines, fresh gaskets, plus a valve set service and some judicious cleaning, it's all back together.
Note the rotted sound pad and general untidyness. The 'after' version just looks better tended. The car is such a joy to play with, and even this mundane task was rewarding.

Wow, I just posted this like .4 seconds before! Thanks Ed. Half the reward is the positive comments from car kooks like us.
Of course I did a few dozen other microscopic and insignificant project (my wife's assessment) but you guys know how it is. Its kinda hard to know where to stop. So, um... we don't!

I've done the fan with the engine IN and OUT of the car. (Had several 3.2s.) The most recent was OUT, but it honestly makes little difference if you follow this brief list..
Far as the methods of general cleaning, pretty straight-forward:
1. Simple green and brushes of diff sizes. Painters brushes work very well. Long handles help.
2. Wire brushes on uncoated metal.
3. Scotchbrite pads on uncoated metal to take out brush marks
4. If I could get to it (such as the fan) I'd follow with NevRDull wadding.
5. Cleaned up with many rags, and paper towels since they were thin enough to get in the hard to reach areas. Use the handle of the artist brushes with a paper towel around them to get the multiple nooks.
For the fan specifically -
1. Leave the belt on. It 'holds' the fan in place while you do the blades.
2. Do all the blades in turn with Scotchbrite.
3. Then use 00 Steel wool to smooth it out.
4. Then to NevRDull to lightly polish.
For the housing - -
1. Remove the belt. You need the fan to move.
2. Use Scotchbrite with two fingers on the pad, moving it inside the housing with the blade moving as you progress.
3. Follow with 00 Steel wool.
4. Then to NevRDull.
For both, I used Duplicolor High Temp Semi Gloss Clear. I've had good success in the past with this on a variety of surfaces (not so good on magnesium). Will last far longer than leaving it unprotected. Hope this helps
Best wishes.

Thanks folks. I shudder at some of these WAY higher level details on this forum, but I'm pleased wth what I have. Drove the car all weekend and today. Plan on taking it on a 3 hour trip over Thanksgiving. The car is fun to look at and to use like a car!
