Usually the motors that have blown up on me in the past were running perfectly fine and self destruct just after I am thinking about how well it's running.

Twice with the wife's car (Honda and VW) and once driving my sister's(Ford)
Note to self: Do *not* let John drive my car. Ever.

I add oil the Iceman way, through the rear window w engine running. I shoot for halfway on the dipstick w oil at 180F. The thermostat won't be fully open, but it's open.

The oil cap does open a huge vacuum leak, and as WB points out, L Jetronic compensates. In fact, this is the lean stop test. The dme will bring it all the way back to 1 lambda within a few seconds. I should video this and post on youtube, since so few know about it.

I consistently take 10 1/2 qts to get me mid-stick. I put it all in at once cold, then the first time I warm her up, I check the stick. If I'm beating her at the track or something, and I see it closer to the low mark, I'll add 1/2 qt. And again double check the next time it's warm. I cannot ever remember adding oil whe running.

I did, and I still say high idle for a brief period is a precursor.

I'm trying to see if this has legs. 5 years from now, some young guy is going to be fixing a fast idle, and one of his buddies will say "he remembers reading on the Internet that engines go to a fast idle before the blow".

youra veddy baad man, veddy baad maan!!

I think '82- 911SC has some sort of rudimentary lambda control. No ECU is correct. It's a basic brain though. Someone correct me if my memory is faulty.
