Default source for used motors?

looking for a used motor to install in my 78 911SC. Need transmission and exhaust also.

Any other sources besides pelican-parts.com and ebay auctions? Most of the salvage yard motors are overpriced IMO

Well, online classifieds, auctions and salvage yards seem to be the places to look. 911 engines are not inexpensive when looking at one in good shape. Try rebuilding one, and you'll see it gets even more expensive.

This guy in my area has a few engines and a transmission

I've heard positive comments about his work from others.

I have a stock 964 3.6 that I pulled out of my conversion that I'm getting ready to market in the next few weeks. It will be air filter to exhaust tip, ecu, and engine wiring harness. I'm probably going to ask $5900 firm.

This is the only reason I pulled it out:

It has been sitting for about two years now, and it's becoming clear that I will not be wanting to return to stock 964 power.

thanks for the leads.

Ed, i'm aware of the cost. but a motor with no warranty from a salvage yard is generally $1-2K more than a comparable motor from a private seller. i was just wondering if there are other sources for classifieds beside what I've seen so far.

Hi,

Since we buy a number of used engines, I have some experience at this,...

1) There will never be a real warranty on a used engine from a salvage operation OR a private party. Its "Caveat Emptor" on anything like this.

2) I never buy an engine from a salvage operator without an agreement for refund if the leakdown test doesn't pass muster. Thats something difficult to do with a private party.

The only sources for such things are the aforementioned salvage folks and the various classifieds which include: local newspapers, E-Bay, Craig's List, Rennlist, Pelican's Forums, and local PCA classified listings. The "Caveat" rule applies to all however a reputable salvage operator should refund your money if it doesn't pass.

Hope this helps,

yes, thanks.

Pelican seems to be a great resource for classifieds. I wondered if there was a similar site.

I've also heard of a salvage yard north of Texas.

Oklahome Foreign is good. But, I wonder if the OP knows what good 911 engines go for?

I live 60 miles south of Oklahoma Foreign and have been there on multiple occasions. IMO they are overpriced, although they may be one of my few options that have a good supply of what I'm looking for. Their ebay auctions seem to be on the high side pricewise.

define "good" 911 engines. I've been pricing them but admittedly haven't been looking that long. I'm well aware that porsche parts aren't cheap. or BMW. My euro BMW motor was $6500US used. But that's for an M3 motor. I would expect to pay less for a 78 911 SC motor from a junkyard.

what do you think I should expect to pay? and for what condition? mileage? accessories? clutch? flywheel? gearbox? exhaust?

Seems like $5k comes to mind for a good motor. One that may be out of a wrecked car with some documentation. Add more for a trans.

Rebuilding one "decently" can run $10k if you do the work. Engines are where 911 ownership can get expensive.

that's about what I was expecting, +/- $1k. I guess I'm not too far off, then. generally a bit less for the smaller older motors, and more for the newer, more powerful motors.

thanks

What, exactly, do you need? Rarely anymore does someone just get a used engine for a plug-in. The days of keeping the 2.7L series running with a 3.0L or 3.2L upgrade have kind of passed. If it's for a race/track car, you'll be tearing into it anyway.

Maybe you can find a wrecked car or a rust bucket where you can hear the motor run. We did that with an SC and it worked well.
