Can't help but notice all the members with "5-star" ratings. Also can't help but notice most of those people only have one vote? Hmmmmm voting for themselves? Now I can imagine those for John Walker, Roland Kunz and Bill Gregory are justly deserved, but come on now, we all can't be experts!

I believe that's referred to as a mutual admiration society Kurt. Just look at who the 5 star group is. It's self explanatory. But your comment earned five stars from me Kurt.

Seen this infopop UBB in action before on other sites, you can't vote for yourself, plus, it has a "niceness" feature built in, it will only show stars if the average of all votes is at least 4 or 5, or something like that.

I am not too sure about these things also...
I guess they're cool in a way, but it kinda makes it wierd to ask a question when you got this 5 star thing making it look like you're a mini version of Bruce Anderson.

Maybe an interesting approach would be for members / posters to rate themselves. That way, readers could compare the quality of info posted to the self-rating. If someone rated themselves a "5", but their contributions were consistently "1", we'd have some "deeper insight"...

I hate to burst the "rating conspiracy theory" bubble, but I think it's an option that comes with this particular web package. I haven't programmed this, but I've seen the package used on numerous sites for various topics (it's a good package). I've seen the "rate member" be "junior member, member, and senior member", ratings with stars (like this one), elimination of it all together, and some others.
I don't know who gave me 5 stars (if I still have them
...hey....THANKS!) and I don't care. I don't pay any attention to them anyway. It's not like it's based on some type of technical test or anything.

Damn! Another conspiricy theory busted - how disappointing. One of my favorite quotes is from Winston Churchill, trying to keep a grip on WW2, (paraphrased) "... never resort to explanation by conspiricy what can otherwise be explained by chance..." (or stupidity...).
