Hello + thermostat for oil cooler
Hi,
Thought I'd try out this board too. I have been spending a lot of time at the Pelican site lately and wanted to try this one out too.
I have a 1972 911T that I am redoing. I am doing a bare metal strip, RS ducktail, flares and front spoiler, and putting in a 3.0 SC engine.
I'm concerned about cooling with the larger engine and want to install an external oil cooler. I have a RS front spoiler that I will open up and hope to put a radiator style cooler behind the opening. I plan to plumb the cooler with Aeroquip or Earls line and fittings with adapters as necessary.
The question I have is how to convert my '72 remote oil filter housing to have a thermostat like the '72 S cars. I've seen directions someplace, but I can't locate them. I think the thing I read said that there is some machining necessary to install a factory thermostat.
Or does it make more sense to convert to the SC oil tank and external thermostat setup?
I'd prefer to stick with the '72 setup because of the uniqueness of the external oil filler.
Any advice or input will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Charlie

Charlie,
You'll likely need metric-to-an adaptors to plumb the aeroquip/earl's hose. Pegasus Racing carries male and female adaptors for -12an and -16an. (www.pegasusautoracing.com). No affiliation, just satisfied customer.

If your '72 does not have a front cooler, then the suction line from the oil pump comes out of the drivers side of the engine, runs under the forward part of the engine, thence to the oil tank via the oil filter console. The factory 72 aux t-stat was situated in this suction line, in the oil filter console. All you need to do is buy a Mocal thermostat, front cooler, lines, etc from a vendor like BAT. 'T' the Mocal t-stat into this line, run your lines forward etc. This setup will function the same as all of the other front oil cooler setups used from 72 on.
