Question 3.0 Carrera or "wanna-be"

Greetings,

I'm new to this board and 911's for that matter, so I thought I'd pass this question on to someone in the know. I purchased a 911 some time back for $5,200 and thought I was getting a 76 911S w/ 2.7 CIS which needed a new interior and some paint. The p-car had the wider SC flares and 7/8's Fuchs. (I just assumed the PO updated the look).

While cleaning the engine bay, I noticed the stamp Type 930/02 and checked against Bruce's book. Something didn't jive so I checked the chassis #: 91166.... Also, the fuel pump is in the front and all the goodies are there, i.e. turbo valve covers, pressure-fed tensioners, sport seats and knee-board A/C (strange) etc... Are there any good ways to verify if this is a Euro 3.0 Carrera or a PO's attempt at mimicking one?

BTW: The reason the PO purchased the car was for the tail and decklid for his car (no joke). So I ended up with a 911S badge, decklid and quick paint job.

Kevin,
If this is going to be a "Good Luck, look what I found in a garage story....," you've opened it well. A 930 for the price of a 2.7 would indeed be a good story. Let the facts unfold.

chassis # 911660----are 1976 Carrera 3.0 coupes, 911661---- are 1976 Carrera 3.0 targas, 930/02 is the correct engine type # for 3 liter Carrera, check the casting # on the bottom of the block the carrera will have a 930 casting # and be silvery (aluminum) rather than grey/black(magnesium). I have owned my 76 Carrera 3.0 for a long time they are truly sweet. 1093 coupes and 479 targas were built in 76.

Wouldn't the VIN make it clear? Post it.

Mrdi, I certainly hope this is one of those instances, although I wouldn't be upset if it wasn't. After all, I think $5,200 is still more than reasonable for a straight, clean 911 needing a bit of TLC.

Bill, yes the casts are 930 aluminum casts and not magnesium as on the 2.7's.

Jack, the VIN # is 9116601010. The way I interpret this (if I understand correctly) is that according to the VIN the car would be number 1010 in the 3.0 Carrera coupe series. Is that a correct interpretation?

Absolutely, it's good news. I hope the PO enjoys his tail, because he let go of a genuine Carrera 3.0.

9116601010 is the VIN for a 1976 Carrera 3.0, engine type 930/02, transaxle type 915/44, number 1010 out of a total of 1093 that were assigned numbers. The engine serial number should be between 6660001 and 6661385.

Were Carrera 3.0s sold in the US in 1976? My book doesn't show a distinction between US and Euro for 1976, but it does distinguish for 1975.

But wait, Bill Verburg just explained most of this. I need to read these threads more carefully.

In addition to Bill, Noah Pollack and Peter Cafaro on the Pelican site also have Carrera 3.0s.

Congratulations, Kenneth, you've entered the 911 club in pretty high style.

That's terrific news--a Carrera 3.0 for $5,200 is about as good as it gets. I have a '77 Coupe. The 3.0's were sold only to the European market, and there are just a handful in the U.S. They're very light (2470 lbs. stock) and fast--they used what was basically the early 930 motor, but without the turbo. The CIS fuel injection is a bit larger than the SC's, and the Carrera 3.0's had a stiffer suspension than the 2.7's. I'll have to check my books, but I know they have the same sway bar sizes (20/18 fr/rear) as the '76-'77 930, although I'm not sure about torsion bars. Myself and a couple of other fellows with Carrera 3.0's were thinking about putting together a very simple Carrera 3.0 website--just a few pictures and some technical info. Let me know if you want to submit your info. Congrats!

Jack, Mrdi, Bill, Noah,

Thanks for the info and verification. Appears as if I am extremely lucky. That's twice...Also bought a Mercedes 500 SEL awhile back to fix up. Thought I was getting a run-of-the-mill 500 SEL. Turned out to be a Euro-spec with an AMG sport package! Maybe I'll try a third time.

Seriously though, I will post it when it's complete. The interior is gutted and new is going in. I'm at the headliner and I think I'll let someone else do it (per Wayne's headache and advice). I'm having the motor resealed also (oh those leaks...). I'm also contemplating either a Natchamp-type mod or the new turbo kit from member "rfng" as soon as it becomes available. If I go that route, I'll want to keep it cool and run at about 0.5 bar boost with a wastegate, knock sensor and monster blow-off valve. If I want more than that, I guess I'll buy a 930.

That's the problem with 911's, the whole thing becomes a sickness (in a good way) or a case of the flu that can't be cured. I'm sure 99.99% of you can relate.

Best regards...

If you're taking the motor apart, I'd check the valve guides for wear...the Carrera 3.0's were built with the 2.7 guides--I had to do my top end at 142,000 Km (~80,000 miles)

Valve guides were a weak point and mine snapped 3 head studs at ~110,000mi. Blew the air box at ~45,000.

125,000 miles and the engine hasn't been out yet. I know it's coming some day but all repairs up to this point have been minor or because I upgraded something that required lots of dough to do properly..
