Default 1980 911 rear window - seal replacement

Did some searching, found discussions on the quarter windows and talk of relays for the rear defrost.

I'm looking to replace the seal on the rear window, the big one in the middle :P

Defrost wires must be hidden somewhere, I don't see them sticking out in plain site.

Also looks like the seal has two inner lips/flaps.

I replaced the frond windshield seal a few weeks ago, that went pretty well, now need to to the rear one.

Suggestions, etc? All are welcome. It's an 1980 911 sc sunroof coupe.

From memory the rear demist wire is hidden under that 'first' flap that you spoke of. Can't remember which side, maybe both. Just pull it back with your fingers to find the connection.

It's a pretty simple job as I remember, as easy as the front.

look from the engine compartment/driver's side and you'll see wires coming down from above at the sheet metal

Rear window replacement is where a Targa absolutely sucks.

Be careful on the defrost wires, they are 30 years old now.

I can imagine. that rear window curve has to be twice as bad as the windshield !

Appreciate the photos, helps a lot. beginning to think this will be worse then the windshield seal. Thi I'll set aside a few hrs for the job.

Update:

Two days ago I removed the rear window, had to cut the seal's inside lip to get the window to come out.

Got to looking at the new seal vs the old and the new seal does not have the holes pre formed. the original seal appears to have the holes pre formed(molded) for the defrost wires. Do you guys think it's safe to just poke holes and run the wires that a way? I was tempted to take a leather awe and heat it to 'melt' the holes.

Because of the 'double lip' that conceals the wires, I am not looking forward to the installation.. I figure it will be a bugger of a job. On the positive side, my window tint job looks great so far. Way easier work when the glass is on a work bench....
