Default 88 Steering Wheel Restoration Questions

Question #1
Did the steering wheel leather cover on Carrera four-spoke steering wheels match the interior color of the vehicle or were they black?

Question #2
Did the "PORSCHE" lettering on the horn pad come standard? My horn pad doesn't have any lettering.

I am going to get the steering wheel recovered and want to make it look stock.

Thanks!!!

I've only ever seen Black. I'm also sure at some point, Porsche did a custom color under the special wishes program.

Those are the facts, as I see them.

Now, the editorial content: I think anything other than black would look pretty darned ghetto, and would be highly impractical unless it was a dark color.

My interior is Marine Blue...very dark, but if black was the way it came, I want to get black. Any thoughts on the "PORSCHE" lettering on the horn pad?

I guess the question I'd have is what color is the column and the surrounding components? I'd match them, I suppose. Marine blue would work.

Not sure on the Porsche lettering....maybe a request: "show me pics of your 4 spoke steering wheels"?

I have seen Blue wheelskins, infact, someone had one not too long ago on Pelican for sale. My 87 Carrera had a very dark green one to match the Gruenfelsen green dash, but most of them were black. My 88 has the word PORSCHE lettering on it and all I've seen have it. If your dash is black, I would go that way. Maybe a Rennlister has a spare horn pad with PORSCHE on it. Ask and see.

The dash is Marine Blue and there is a Marine Blue leather wrap around the collar of the steering wheel...wouldn't make sense to have a interior colored collar and then not have the wrap be in the same color...I haven't seen any without the lettering on the horn pad so it is odd that mine doesn't have it. Previous owner must have sold it possibly...it's a mystery...

Default Marine Blue Wheel

Went out to look at mine........the wheel is wrapped in marine blue leather, and the rectangular horn 'bar' is lettered 'PORSCHE'....

Don't have a pic of the wheel on my '88, but I found this one on E-bay and it is exactly like mine.

My interior is marine blue and my wheel and dash are both blue. I will go and take a picture tomorrow sometime and post it.

Yes they did make them in blue. Black was most common but if your collar is blue then the wheel should be blue. Lettering for Porsche is standard and is indented. You have what sounds to be a aftermarket horn pad. I'd replace it with a factory pad. No affiliation but I'd use don at Dallas steering wheel, he is excellent and turns the wheel around for you in a few days. Uses factory leather.
