Default 205 vs 225 for front 16 inch Fuchs

I am in need of new tires on my 85 turbo body. The PO put 225/50/16 tires up front even though it came with 205/55/16 up front. The wheels are 7x16 up front. I am debating if I should put the stock size back on when I replace them. I think the later turbo cars starting installing the 225 size from the factory in 86 or 87 on 8 inch wheels on the front. Is there a benefit to having the 225 vs the 205? Is this just a personal preference? Will the 205 have a more compliant ride?

Thanks
Craig

With 225s you will have a little more grip at the expense of greater steering effort.

You might get a bit more bite with the 225s but you'll also get more transition effect. For better overall handling, I believe the 205 is the one to go with.

It depends on what you want to do. If you do want to drive the car in any kind of spirited manner, I'd opt for wider rubber any day. I'd be running 225/245 widths on any 911.

for putting around town, you can really put anything on the car. I have a friend with a turbo look 3.2 that runs 205/225 F/R because that is the only stagger that puts you into a decent street tire for performance..This would be like a Bridgestone RE-11 or a Dunlop Direzza. My friend runs the Direzza, and says they are awesome.

Personally, I think the more rubber you can get under the car the better, but there is a lack of quality tires in the 225/245 stagger. Right now I am looking for the same sizes for my Fuchs 8&9x16 and I am striking out. The ONLY tire I can find matched in those sizes is the Toyo R888, but I'm not sure that will work for what I want. Kuhmo also makes an Ecsta XS that comes in a goofy 265x16 width, but I don't like all the sidewall.

Ed, have I seen your car on R888's in the past? If so, have you ever autocrossed on them? I'm under the impression that they may not heat up fast enough for autoX work, can you comment?

Sorry for the OT

No, I've not run the R888 tire. Seems like the jury is divided on them.

You can find the Toyo Proxes T1R in the 225/50/16 and 245/45/16 sizes on the web. The reviews seem pretty good on these tires given the choices out their. The Fuzion's on Tirerack.com get mixed reviews. I think I will stick with 225/50/16 up front since I like they way it fills out the front fenders.

205s on a Turbo body? may as well chop off the flares! Go for the 225 up front, 245 rear.

205s will not have a more compliant ride, but if you do a lot of low speed/parallel parking, you might notice the increased effort of the 225. Since you already have 225s, this shouldn't be an issue.
