new elctronic ignition, which one?
My mechanic wants me to get the Perma-Tune Electronic Ignition. However, from reading other posts it seems that people prefer the MSD Ignition? Do these parts perform the same task (fix), can one replace the other? The MSD is half the price of the Permatune, and looks a lot better too.
What do you guys suggest?
Thanks!

Rosco,
FWIW,...I'll not install, much less sell a Permatune product to anyone.
MSD and matching coils are the way to go, however they MUST be properly installed for maximum durability and reliability.

"MSD is a proven product."
"Proven", by what standards and by whom? The original Bosch unit is much
more reliable, given its less complexity. Besides, who wants their 911 engine
compartment to look Mickey Mouse and like its in the process of receiving a
Chevy engine conversion.
Bottom line: Lots of claims about the MSD but no real substantive data.
But again, it's all about 'herd mentality' as found on most forums.

Loren always has colourfull posts and they usually bring a smile to my face .. this one is very true .. ( not sure about performance ) but it kind of turns me off when I see red boxes and wires inside the engine bay . i prefer originality and if you can score an OE setup would look great on your original car ..

Is there a certain MSD Coil which is recommended above for the MSD 6AL? I notice there are many: MSD Blaster High Vibration with Epoxy fill, Blaster 2 which is oil filled.... Is one better than the other when using the car as a DD?
Thanks!

There is said to be NOS around for $3750.00
Or some hit and miss remans for $1000-$1500
Or you buy about a $1500 in tools and test equimpment, $400-$500 in parts and get an electrical education and fix yourself.

Use the High-Vibration Blaster coil so you can mount it in the original position.

Thanks Everyone!!
I read thru a lot of old posts on this topic, and although I do find credence to what Loren says, despite any ulterior motive he may have (apparently he fixes the original Bosch part), I decided to go with the MSD. Loren can say what he will, but so many of the "Rennlist Pros" swear by the MSD.
I got the MSD 6AL and the High Vibration Blaster Coil at Summit Racing for $250! If Permatune has such a bad rep, how do they get away with charging $500 for the electronic ignition and $130 for the coil?
