Shifting improvements

I've noticed a little play at the shift rod junction/connector on my '87 coupe. I am going to replace the ball cup and shift rod bushings as well as the shift rod connector rubber washer and the bolts. The rubber washer is secured with rivets top and bottom, and the rivets are on back order, so that replacement will have to wait. I just wanted to see if anyone thinks replacing the bolts at the rear shift connector will make a difference in how it shifts? The bolts have a small rubber ring around them which looks like it could wear out and cause a little looseness at the shift rod connector. Any opinions?

dont kno wabout the g50's but on the 915 just getting all the parts fresh and well adjusted made a HUGE differance, I suspect replacing worn parts and getting it all up to snuff will be money (small money) well spent!

It sounds like you're describing a G-50 shifter. If there is play between the bolts and the rubber, then yeah. You should either replace everything at one time or buy a complete shift coupler, I would think.

Thx, guys. I appreciate your input. I have Wayne Dempsey's book, and it describes the 915 transmission shift linkage. I just wasn't sure how much of a difference changing each of the components in part #16 above would make. I guess I'll wait and do everything at once.

If you have an 87, you don't have a 915 tranny, but a G50. The only things really requiring a change are the friction ring #2 on the rod and the ball socket. The coupler #16 a, b, & c, hardly ever need changing. The rod is solid & so is the bearing body. The rubber washer #16a may need replacement due to aging. I've got 130,000 mi on my 88 Carrera and it shifts like new since I replaced #2 & #10.
